The Spanish government sparked a furious row yesterday after it emerged that it had drawn up a timetable to halve state funding of the Roman Catholic Church and to ban crucifixes from public buildings.


The Socialist government has already pedged to confront the Church ideologically and fiscally and to transform Spain into a fully secular society by scrapping the Church's "privileged position in society".

Further enraging conservatives, the government has drawn up plans to finance the teaching of Islam in state-run schools and to give funds to mosques on the grounds that it will create greater understanding of the country's one million Muslims.

Spain proposes cultural alliance

The Spanish prime minister has called for an international effort to resolve cultural and religious differences between the Western and Muslim world.

ose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said "an alliance of cultures" was necessary in a world facing conflict because of poverty and Islamic radicalisation.

Mr Zapatero, at the UN General Assembly meeting, said the alliance could deepen political and cultural relations.

He also defended his decision to withdraw Spanish troops from Iraq.

Mr Zapatero said he had asked the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, to set up a high level group to study the creation of an alliance of civilisations.

Speaking on the fringes of the UN meeting in New York, Mr Zapatero said: "This alliance would have as its fundamental objective to deepen political, cultural and education relations between those who represent the so-called Western world and, in this historic moment, the area of Arab and Muslim countries."

The BBC's Michael Buchanan says the Spanish prime minister is trying to position his country as a bridge between Europe and north Africa.

Mr Zapatero said the world could become a clash of civilisations, with poverty and Islamic radicalisation tearing Western and Muslim countries apart.

The alliance he envisages could therefore prevent hate and misunderstanding from developing by looking at political and cultural issues - everything from joint peace keeping missions to interfaith dialogue.

Our correspondent says the idea resembles a previous initiative calling for a dialogue between civilisations, launched by Iranian President Mohammed Khatami in 1998, which resulted in little obvious success.

Mr Zapatero also referred to his government's decision to withdraw 1,300 troops from Iraq soon after winning the general elections in March this year.

Many Spanish voters believed the 11 March attacks on Madrid that killed 191 people would not have happened if Spain had not supported the war in Iraq.

Mr Zapatero said peace was a task that required more determination and heroism than war.

He added that the international community must combat terrorism rationally by dealing with its roots in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and through economic development.

As depressing as it is, it is also amusing to me, as a Dane.

When Denmark realized this shit was happening as well as a result of our generous immigration and refugee laws, Denmark rewrote its immigration laws to make them some of the tightest and toughest in Europe.  And we got so much shit from Sweden about it - getting all high and mighty about how mean and insensitive the Danes were being, and how unfair it was to the poor immigrants.

But Denmark SHOULD have done this about 15 years ago, so hopefully it won't be too late.  There are already parts of Copenhagen that are really dangerous now, because of gangs of muslim youths - and immigrants (even though less than 5% of the population) account for some astonishingly huge proportion of violent crimes and sexual assaults.  It's very depressing.  In the early 1980s, a hot girl could have walked through all of Copenhagen at 3:00 AM in a bikini without having to worry about anything.  (Okay, Im lying - it's never warm enough for that in Denmark ).

My guess is that soon Denmarks criminal laws are going to have to be completely rewritten as well, to deal with serious and violent crimes committed by youths that the Danish legal system never really had to deal with before.

I think that the main countries in Middle East have tighter control on the terrorist than they would like us to beleive. Hitting us in Iraq is ok, but no attacks in the US or you get wacked. Good God that is perverse. I can understand the banning of crucifixes in public buildings on the grounds to become a more democratic nation, but that is not his intent. Furthermore, this isn't a war of understanding... it's a war revolving around the stark contrasts between to cultures forged by religion. I think all he has done is set the staging ground for a huge religious clash much like that of the Crusades. Besides, Spain has a long history with being invaded by Muslims and religous wars.

When will they learn? Another stab in the back to countries trying to eliminate the terrorist threats. Terrorists cannot be reasoned with. I recall Jack VanImpe going on about how the AntiChrist would come when a member of the Spanish royal family assumes the Presidency of the EU since their bloodline traces back to Charlemagne who was the last Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire....Blah, blah, blah....
I always thought Jack was as crazy as a rat trapped in a can though.  His shows all seemed alike.

Why, in the secularization of Spain (and California), teaching Christianity in public schools is a big no no but teaching Islam is OK?
