it depends on the job you are hired for and your manager. Mine is pretty easy as far as personal certs so long as they apply to the job at hand. On the hardware side, IBM does their own training and certs are good for within IBM although some other companies do recognise them and they can come in handy. Software training is pretty much a non issue as The Hardware techs usually do little if any software beyond a basic reload. Customers are 100% responsible for their software apps and in most cases the OS as well.
IBM does have a good college program. they will pay your college tuition and fees if the classes lead to a job related degree. I have seen lots of guys get the degree and bail so sometimes management doesn't like to sign off on it.
My first suggestion to you as a new IBM'er is to hookup with someone that has been around for awhile. There are TONS of things you will never be told that you are entitled to. They can also give you advise on vactions, time reporting and training. Sometimes even your manager won't have a clue. The old timers know the games to get what they need.
