Air Force Memorial Breaks Ground Today
It's Day No. 2 For Air Force Flyovers

POSTED: 11:40 am EDT September 15, 2004

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Ground will be broken today for the National Air Force Memorial on land next to Arlington National Cemetery known as the Naval Annex, in Arlington, Va.

Military officials say the two-year project is the first to honor the Air Force. The memorial will contain three stainless steel spires, with the tallest soaring to 270 feet.

There will be a flyover of vintage and modern military aircraft as part of the groundbreaking ceremony. The aircraft will include a B-52 bomber, a P-51 vintage fighter plane and an F-15 and F-16 flying in formation.

The Air Force Memorial Foundation has raised $38.5 million for the project. The group hopes to raise an additional $3 million to complete the memorial.
