Does he handload? Its a somewhat obsolete cartridge nowadays. Bass Pro ought to have some as well as Old Western Scrounger. Otherwise check out your local mom and pop shops.

222 Rem Mag went out of production a few years ago. The best you can do is reload (Midwayusa has brass and dies). Next best is to google "old western scrounger" (they have it for a buck a cartridge). After that, try to visit as many gun shops as possible to locate the one or two dusty boxes they may have on their shelf.

I've got some dies and brass I'd sell. I sold my Remington 722 in that caliber awhile back. I really liked that rifle.

Just do a search on the internet - I found half a dozen places that load .222 rem mag commmercially. We had a manager here that had a custom rifle started 25 years ago and decided to get it running last year. He was surprised when the scope mechanic told him the ammo wasn't available any longer - after the scope was mounted!

Neck up some Ruger .204? The last Rifleman said that the round was derived from the .222 RemMag. Or better yet, rebarrel your piece. It might be cheaper!

They only have 222 Rem., which is not the same as the 222 Rem Mag. I did a Yahoo search on 222 Rem Mag and found zero sources for the ammo. Can the chamber be reamed to .223? Yes, deer hunting. This is north Alabama. Deer aren't much bigger than large dogs. Shots are pretty close and he'll be getting a 2x7 Leupold scope here shortly, no biggie. Thanks, Merlin |

I think the .222 mag is the same case size as the .223 Rem! Thats what Stoner was after after all just a .222 mag! But others will have more important and usefull data!~!!

The .222 Magnum has the case capacity to outperform the .223 by about 5% (they're not identical). The case is 1/10" longer than the .223, but factory ammo isn't loaded to the pressures of factory .223 rounds, so the performance of factory ammo is indistinguishable.
As far as I know, nobody is commercially manufacturing .222 Mag today. |
