i'm looking for a bolt action .308, under $900. i like the rem. 700s. can anyone give advise on which model is the best.
-note- this rifle will not have a hunting purpose, target only.

Remington 700 VS.

Can be had for around $675 if you look.

It is identical to the 700 Police except for the stock which is not as swolen in the grip area.  I personally find the VS stock to be much more comfortable.

The only other difference is the J-lock on the VS.  Once you unlock it, you will never know it is there.

so does the VS have the heavy bbl?

BTW i haven't found remington's website to be very informative.

Absolutely.  It is identical to the Police model in every way except for some slight shaping of the stock and the J-Lock.

I had one in .300 win mag that would shoot one hole groups at 100 yds with handloads.

Every VS I have seen/shot was extremely accurate.

Or you can get the 700PSS/Police for more money and get nothing more than a wider palm area on the stock.  The Police model I had was not as accurate as the VS models I have had experience with.

You can always go the Savage route and get a 10-FP LE for around $400.  The newer models have the accutrigger which is actually much better than the Remington factory trigger and is user adjustable down to 2.5 lbs.  There are many reports of the Savage being more accurate than the Remington out of the box.

Go to a dealer that has both the 700PSS and 700LTR.
Handle them for no less than 15 minutes.
Take one of them home with you.

I have to agree about the Rem 700 VS. Great rifles.

BTW, don't those use the H-S Precision stocks? I know the stocks are different than the PSS version. I recall liking the VS one better myself.

Now the next question to ask is which optics? Hehe. I'll do this now to save you the trouble later.

DO NOT do that!

Dealers charge out the ass for the PSS and LTR rifles.

You will be much better off to get a VS after looking online for the right price.  If you must have a Police or LTR model, find one of them online for about $150-$200 less than any dealer in your area will have them.

Both the 700 Police and the VS use HS Precision stocks which are full-length aluminum bedded.  They are identical in every way except for the width of the palm area and the VS is rounded off on the end of the forearm whereas the Police model is flat.  Also, the Police model is black, the VS model has a grey spider-web pattern which adds texture to the stock.

SHIVAN what should i consider a good price for the 700p. thats what i'm leaning towards. since i think the J-LOCK is a load of PC legislation. i plan on keeping the gun as stock as possible. just a good scope and a quality set of rings.

I have a Remington VS in .308 that will consistantly shoot into 3/4 inch at 100 yards.

If you know something about rifles, and know better than to believe lies about one-hole rifles, you will appreciate just how great a 3/4 inch rifle really is.

The 700P can be had for $650 if you look long enough.

DO NOT fall for the first price you see.

Do your research.

Friend... I have seen several "one-hole" VS rifles.  Now, when I say one hole, I mean a three shot group at 100 yds that makes a small clover leaf.  I consider anything smaller than .5" to be "one hole".  Every VS I have seen shoots better than 3/4" with handloads.

i know better than to expect one out of the box. one hole rifles exist but they are built not bought. i really don't want to go back down this expensiveroad again. i currently ave a 10/22 that has logged more time being added on to than it has at the range. i just want a an acceptable shooting rifle that isn't high maintence.

Exactly.

I've seen some people with the 700P, and they hate the stock.

I see no reason to go with the P model,  espically if you want to make it a long term custom gun.

The j-lock is a pain, I'll give them that.

Well, didn't man to hijack the thread.

What I was talking about was, as I said, "will consistantly shoot into 3/4 inch" groups.  Mine often will shoot 1/4 inch cloverleafs.  But not every time.  But it will shoot 3/4" or less groups every time.

I have seen a target shot at 500 yards by G. David Tubb (He has dominated Camp Perry for years) and he had an extremely tight group but it sure wasn't one ragged hole.  If he can't do it, us mere mortals can't either.

What about a Savage? The 10FP-LE2B model looks nice. I am thinking about the possibility of getting one as my first .308 here in the near future. It comes with the McMillan stock.

Here it is at Impact Guns:

Here's somebody's findings from another thread where he went hog hunting with it.

I have a 700VS and it will shoot 1 ragged hole at 100 yds if I do my part.  I shot a 6" 10 shot group at 350 yds with Port surplus for what that is worth to ya.  I like mine but I'll tell ya it is no lightweight, to carry that thing around all day would be work, but when you care to send the vary best go 700 and go .308

I have just sold my 30.06 and .300 to help fund my new project which happened to be a long range rifle for hunting and some target.

The models i was looking at was the Savage 10fp, LE2, and the Remington VS and PSS.

Went to the gun show yesturday to handle them and check out fit and finish.  For the extra money the VS has the 10FP beat hands down.  I didnt care for the stock on the PSS so in the next week i will be buying the Remington VS.  Man that is a sweet gun.  It was at the show for $650.00.  I would like to know where you found the rifle for $565.00

I talked with a Dan Abbott who runs the Oregon Firearms Acadamy and he had a guy from Leupold there for the day for a sniper class.  This guy had a Remington VS with a Fixed 4X scope and whooped everyone there.  So i will probably just put on a 3x9 instead of a larger scope.

I bought a 700 VS from Galeans for $599. I was just looking for the action and the barrel as I do not like the factory supplied H&S as the LOP is too short. I have the origianl stock if anyone wants to buy it for $100.

I then added a HS Prec. Tactical stock, SS 10X scope, Warne rings and I removed the j lock system with parts I bought from Midway (bolt shroud and lightweight firing pin and heavy duty spring).

You can't go wrong with this set up.

It's capable of greater accuracy than I can provide but here is a sample of a decent group.

I love my Rem. VLS, Rifle shooter did an article on these a while back, got gret reviews.  My best group is around .353 - 3 shots at 100, 5 shots was about .613, with 168's.   A friend has the savage 10fp, and it shoots great as well, I just don't care for the feel of the  stock as much as on the remington.

QuietShooter did the real deal Army Sniper class and has an LTR.....I believe he registered several first shot hits at 900mtrs.....

Likely a 99.9% chance it was the shooter.  Also the LTR comes in at least two calibers.  A .308 should do it.....though it's not the best.  I have no facility to get to 800yds, so it's a moot point to me.

How about accuracy?

Take a look at the Sako 75's.

With the currency rates what they are, the prices have gone up, and Sako was never cheap to begin with, but you will be hard pressed to find a rifle with better finish work no matter what you pay for it.

I paid just over $900 for my 75 stainless synthetic in .300 Remington Ultra mag earlier this year.

The trigger is sweeeeeeet, and the bolt action is just butter.

The 75 in Varmint trim is pretty nice, but likely out of your price range.

Unless you need mil dots, there is nothing wrong with Nikon.  The Nikons I have seen had great glass, much better than anything from Tasco, Bushnell, Simmons, etc.  Unless you are gong to replace it with a Leupold, S&B, Nightforce, or IOR, keep the Nikon.
