Auden was politically active, wasn't he?  I remember him being associated with the Spanish Civil War; I dont know in what capacity (soldier or journalist).

But it's strange how his poem could be describing geopolitics after 9/11, even though he was writing about the 30's. Plus the mention of Thucydides.  Interesting.  Thanks for posting that.
