I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna and the "Maintenace Required" light on the dashboard is pissing me off. I go through the owner's manual and do all the stuff they say to day at the specified mileage. When my wife took it to the dealer, they wanted a LOT of money to do the 5K, 10K, 15K, 20K, etc. maintenance stuff (she told them it hadn't been done because she didn't know I have been doing it) before shutting it off.

This light just looks like a way to get you back to the dealer every 5K miles so you can give them big $$$ to do simple stuff.

How do I shut it off????

if it's your typical MIL light, Autozone or any auto parts store can prolly reset it for free.

also, try turning the key on, pumping the gas pedal 5 times, then cranking the car.

That's how you reset the 'change oil' light on newer chevy trucks...who knows what else it works on?

You might want to figure out what malfunction is causing the light to come on. The Haynes manuals have a section that tells you how to check without a computer tool.

This works for Lexus and the Prius .... try it and see if it works on the Sienna

1. With your car OFF, place your key in the ignition and turn to "On". Do not start the car.
2. Find the odometer button and press until it reads the total odometer setting, (not the Trip A or Trip B setting).
3. Turn the key to OFF.
4. Place your finger back on the odometer button, press and hold. At the same time, turn the key back to "On".
5. Hold the odometer button in until the MAINT REQD light goes out...should take about 8-10 seconds.

I would imagine that the factory repair manual for your vehicle (NOT the Haynes shop manual but the really fat one you can usually purchase from Toyota) probably has instructions on how to reset it. Personally I'd probably just disable it by unplugging it.

check engine light the same? fix the problem and find someone with a OBDII reader to have it reset like autozone, they'll do a free read

walmart sells OBDII readers that work with 96 and newer vehicles for $98

Thanks for the replies. I guess I should have specified that I do not want to destroy the vehicle in order to turn off the light (carry gun, tannerite, baseball bat) - I still owe too much money on it

.

I do not believe the vehicle has any real problem. It's just that I think the #%$#&^ light is going to come on every 5,000 miles for the rest of eternity (by that time, tannerite may be looking pretty good

).

Open the hood, disconnect the NEGATIVE battery terminal. Count to ten, and reconnect the terminal.

Dude, that's harsh! Yeah, I should have thought of that, but you don't have to read/post here if you don't want to. (BTW - I love your airplane posts. How do you keep up with all the current info?) Anyway, your link is for a "Check Engine Light," not the "Maintenance Required Light." But, I took your "friendly" advice and, indeed, I found the info I needed. Turns out that "Engineer" was right in his post.

I just got a thing in the mail about the Ox sensors on Toyota engines. I had one of mine go out in my Tundra and it was fixed under warranty.

What the thing in the mail said is that they had some bad Ox sensors between 00 and 04 and that any work will be paid for by Toyota.

Check it out. It might be worth it.

On my Honda there's a tiny recessed button to push just above the steering column.
