Bush Leadership on Homeland Security Undercut By His Refusal to Renew Ban, Say Voters in Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio; Voters Make Clear Distinction Between Generic "Gun Control" Issues and Renewing Ban on Assault Weapons

Washington, DC - The results of new polling released today by Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates show conclusively that voters in three election swing states view President Bush's blocking of the national Assault Weapons Ban as a pivotal indicator of his lack of leadership on homeland security. This finding is potentially damaging to the Bush campaign at a point when President Bush has been promoting his strength on national security issues. As importantly, support for the ban results in three key "swing" states moving from close races into clear leads for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry.

The recent poll also highlights that a strong position on extending the Assault Weapons Ban is an issue that can mean the difference between a Kerry and Bush victory in the November presidential election. Poll findings indicate that:

   * In Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, President Bush loses significant ground on being "best equipped to handle terrorism" after voters are told his position on the Assault Weapons Ban;
   * Voters make a clear distinction between generic "gun control" issues and renewing the ban on assault weapons;
   * The Assault Weapons Ban issue alters the presidential race, resulting in Kerry victory in all three pivotal "swing states," including giving Kerry an 11 point lead in Pennsylvania;
* In addition to significant support for renewing the ban in all three states, national support for renewing the ban is also very high, with 74% in favor of renewal.

These findings mean a setback for the Bush/Cheney campaign as it attempts to make Republican leadership on Homeland Security a major dividing line between the two presidential candidates. The poll results also indicate that support for renewing the Assault Weapons Ban is a factor in Senate and Congressional races in all three states.

Although President Bush claimed in 1999 that "it makes no sense for assault weapons to be around our society," he continues to play politics with the issue, refusing to push Republican Congressional leadership to renew the ban -- despite the fact that an aide to House Speaker Dennis Hastert has said that "if Bush pushes for it, the ban will probably be reauthorized. But if he doesn't, the chances of legislation passing this year are remote." Support for renewal of the ban has also been the subject of over 85 editorials in newspapers in 32 states -- from Alabama, Georgia and Texas to California, Illinois and Michigan.

Methodology:
Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates conducted 500 interviews with likely voters. The overall margin of error is +/- 4.38% and larger for subgroups.

The only reason this is an issue is because of the 1994 Republican electoral sweep in congress. The AWB ushered in a new paradigm in congressional politics.

The only reason I believe it is being pushed is to convince nervous republicans that people care. The demoncraps know that if they can get this pushed through it will cost the republicans dearly.

Do like mommy said, "ignore them and they will go away"

Every single poll I've seen blows the AWB out of the water. The democrats have "polling" companies that generate results that support the Democratic platform. I just disregard the pro AWB polls as democratic propoganda.

According to Washington Business Forward, PSB's "reputation is largely as a Democratic political polling firm, closely associated with both President Bill Clinton's administration as well as the Senate campaign of his wife Hillary.

Douglas Schoen

From the biography for Douglas Schoen on Penn, Schoen & Berland's website:

Douglas E. Schoen is a founding partner and a principal strategist of Penn, Schoen & Berland. He was named "Pollster of the Year" in 1996 by the American Association of Political Consultants for his work in the Clinton campaign.

He was President William Jefferson Clinton’s research and strategic consultant during the 1996 reelection, and has been widely credited with creating and effectively communicating the message that turned around the President’s political fortunes between 1994 and 1996.
