Sure. Depending on your dial-up service, you may have to make a long distance call though. If you travel a lot, look for a service provider with toll free dial-up numbers.

Yes, you need to make sure to get a list of local numbers for the places you plan to go. I use a wireless phone to acces the internet on the road. There are a couple of ways of doing this one costs about twenty bucks a month and provides a decently fast connection, the other uses your airtime, and is slower than mud.

AOL is a virus.
Many like Earthlink for access just about anywhere. I don't use it, but know many who do. Get free Earthlink disks at Office Max, and places like that. |

I have accesed the intenet from my car and from a boat, my wife had used it in the car while we were driving down the Interstate at 70MPH.
Edited to add: You don't need a disk to set up Earthlink, all you have to do is set up dialup networking with thier dial up number, and your user ID and password. I have an AOL account, and use it when the hotel I am staying at doesn't have high speed internet and i can't get a reliable signal on my wireless phone, when I have to use my wireless phone as a dialup modem I use Earthlink. Earthlink and AOl have the most extensive coverage in my opinion. |

If you had a wireless card you could likely "borrow" someone's network connection. There's about 50 of them in a square mile here where I live and probably any given neighborhood plus most mail service business and coffee houses have wireless nodes for a nominal amount.
Large ISPs like Earthlink etc. have local dialup #s nationwide that preclude long distance charges. |

I will also add that many hotels provide free high speed INternet acces via either ethernet or WIFI, and many truckstops offer inexpensive WIFI as well, I use Pilot and TA alot.
You would be surprised how many unsecure wireless connections are out there, but you really can't depend on finding one exactly where and when you need/want it. It is a nice surprise to be able to check your email in the parking lot you pulled into to check the map though. |

I'm always on the road, and what I found woirks best is goinf dedicated wireless. For $32 / month, a get unlimited minutes with T-mobile. It doesn't work everywhere - but I got tired of trying to figure out local dial-up numbers, or screwing with motel phone lines. PLuse, with no moir eneed for a phone line at home, I actually save money over dial-up.

I use NetZero. So I just need the local access numbers from where I'm going and I'll be OK. I dont even have a laptop but I may aquire one before I bug out. What do I need to do to set up the laptop?

I use Tmobile as well, you are getting screwed at $32 a month, I only pay $20.00, I work at Tmobile towers so I get great signals and speed while I am working, but it has a tendency to suck hind tit in hotel rooms, so I revert to using Earthlink dialup over the cell phone, or AOL dial up over the house phone.

You set up a dial up connection (pretty straight forward) with the local access number, and your username/password. |

All you should really need are the phone number to your ISP and your login ID and password, your ISP may require there software, so you may need a copy of that. You will also need a telephone cord, I recomend that six footers that they sell inexpesively at WalMart, although some people like the slightly higher quality ten foot cords that they sell for about a dollar more.
