Sure. Depending on your dial-up service, you may have to make a long distance call though. If you travel a lot, look for a service provider with toll free dial-up numbers.

AOL is a virus.

Many like Earthlink for access just about anywhere.  I don't use it, but know many who do.

Get free Earthlink disks at Office Max, and places like that.

If you had a wireless card you could likely "borrow" someone's network connection.  There's about 50 of them in a square mile here where I live and probably any given neighborhood plus most mail service business and coffee houses have wireless nodes for a nominal amount.

Large ISPs like Earthlink etc. have local dialup #s nationwide that preclude long distance charges.

I'm always on the road, and what I found woirks best is goinf dedicated wireless.  For $32 / month, a get unlimited minutes with T-mobile.  It doesn't work everywhere - but I got tired of trying to figure out local dial-up numbers, or screwing with motel phone lines.  PLuse, with no moir eneed for a phone line at home, I actually save money over dial-up.

Tell me the moron basics. If I show up in a hotel and plug a laptop into the phone line...then what do I do to get on the net?

You set up a dial up connection (pretty straight forward) with the local access number, and your username/password.

Before you travel DL a list of the dial up numbers.  Save them in notepad so you can use local access...
