OK WHO VOTED FOR THE 308???... EXPLAIN YOURSELF!!!

.308. Easily wins because it is more efficient, available as new manufacture non corrosive surplus, has probably the best factory loaded match ammo available, and is available in the AR10 and other short action weapons.

.30-06. It doesn't need to be explained. Everyone knows it's better.

Personally, I like both but the .308 gives .30-06 performance in a shorter round.

Multi-purpose, ubiquitously employed, highly effective - .308

A rifle for all seasons.

[#16]
.308

More accurate, period.

Costs less, etc...

Yes 30-06 can be loaded 'hotter', but that's not enough to make it a better round...

Plus, 30-06 surplus is generally 50+ years old... Surplus .308 is 10-20yrs old...

If I want it hotter than .308, I will get a .300 Magnum.

I just like .30.06
Just fun, not sure why but makes me happy shooting it.

Well my brother has a 308 and I have a 30-06. For some reason, his 308 has more of a sharp "kick" than my 30-06. Probably he is shooting "hotter" rounds than i.... I dont know.

All I know is it is cooler to say 30 "OT" six

than

308.

So that is it... Final answer... the 30-06 is better because I own a rifle that shoots it and it sounds cooler. Can you HONESTLY argue with that?

I think not.

308 kicks less. Sorry, but that's serious: I've noticed some flinching with a Garand that doesn't happen with M14.

308 = better accuracy.

I read a book by a Vietnam era sniper a while back - not Hathcock.

In his autobiography, he stated that initially he was issued a Winchester M70 in .30-06.  Towards the end of his tour, this was turned in and he was issued a Remington 700 in .308.  While trying to engage a target at extremely long range and from elevation (a VC in a spider hole that had decimated an entire squad of Marines), he was simply not able to put a round on target because the .308 simply couldn't make it out as far as the .30-06.  His first rounds were falling 100+ yards short, and he attempted to walk the rounds into the target - all while a terrible drama was being played out at ground level, between the lone surviving squad member and the VC.  Finally, the USMC machine gunner was able to kill the VC by charging him and firing directly into the spider hole, and the sniper watched through his scope as the machine gunner collapsed in tears at the death of all of his friends.

Now, that little anecdote is not scientific data, but it has since stuck in my head, and given my a tiny grain of mistrust of the .308.

I  shoot both but I have to go with the 308 . Hard tofind decent 30/06 to feedmy M1.

Avenger, what book?

Anyways, from what I can gather .308 is more accurate and 30-06 is harder hitting. I'll take a 30-06 myself, as the difference between a 3" group and a 6" group is still a dead man or animal.

30-06 but i prefer my 7.62x54R cheaper then both and damn hard hitting down range

.30-06 will give you 150 to 200 fps more speed at the muzzle if deflection in the wind is critical.  Other than that, you will never tell the difference in accuracy until you go to a custom rifle; rack grade guns aren't good enough to show the difference in accuracy.

Besides that, you aren't a true blooded American if you don't own at least one '06.

I wonder why the Rem 700 that snipers use aren't chambered in 30-06?

Wouldn't that answer the question?

Except for about 300 ft/lbs of energy and no 200+ grainers in the .308, I agree.

I bought a Remington 700 ADL in 30-06 for cheap.  I plan to have a smith rebarrel it with a heavy barrel, just for the hell of it.

The 30.06 is being used in guns that are almost 100 years old. The steel in these guns is suspect so most of the commercial loads have been stripped of power because of liability issues.

I also notice that the Garand is picky about commercial 30.06 ammo and prefers the M2 ball most.

I am a .308 guy, almost as much power in a short action.

I would say the .30-06

At least here in the midwest if a SHTF scenerio ever happened, .30-06 ammo could be found damn near in every house

Ah yes, my brother in arms.  Part of the Minnesota Anti-Canadian Invasion Deer Hunter Militia here as well.

I don't know all my neighbors, but I guarantee that at least 50% of the houses on my street have a 30-06 with a box of 20 in them somewhere.

Of course my next door neighbor has a very sweet 300 mag that I'm jealous of, but my 30-06 has killed more deer than his 300

AvengeAR15:

I read the same book, it was written by Ed Kugler and it's called "Dead Center"

He HATED the switch from '06 to .308 because "it had no legs". And the passage you refer to is as gut wrenching as they come when you're reading it. He KNEW he could have influenced the battle and he couldn't do a thing about it with the newer-.308-rifle.

And this wasn't the first book I read by a Vietnam-era sniper that echoed the same thing. In fact, I read another book by a sniper in VN that carried an M14 when he didn't carry the sniper rifle and he even made a comment that he liked the M14 but that the Winchester mod 70 '06 could really reach out.

BTW, I voted 30-06 and I own one, strictly on the basis of what I've read about War I and II as well as Vietnam snipers.

The .308 is nice and to me has less recoil than an '06, but I think the '06 is better all around.

....WHY?

There should be a both option on the poll, honestly

The only bolt guns I own are in rem 700 in 308 and savage 111 in 30-06.
I figure there ain't nothing on this continent that I can't take with one or the other.

Honestly.

The 308 has the advantage with lighter rounds but the 06 has the advantage with heavier rounds, so it depends on what yer shooting, and why. Typicly I shoot 168gr ballistic tips from my 06, and 168gr black hills out of my 308. I plan to bring both guns deer hunting this year. The 06 is lighter and has a shorter barrel. The 308 weighs 18lbs damn near and has a 24in barrel. One I'll use in the stand the other I'll use to stalk.(can ya guess which I'll use for which?)

They both have their place and their use, and one isn't nessesarily better than the other untill you get to the bullet weight issue. Also most 06 as I've been told is down loaded with light bullets. I'm sure you could get higher velocities with lighter bullets from an 06 but than what do you give up accurecy wise? Don't know I'm not a reloader so I can't really say.

As far as accurecy goes, well the 308 I have has been worked extensivly and was built for accurecy. My 06 has never had any acurising done to it. It will however shoot sub MOA when I do my part consitantly. The .308 is a consistant sub MOA shooter to, a bit better than the 06, but as I said it was made for that and the savage is still in the out of box configuration.

So I'd say in all honesty as far as i'm concerned it's a wash.

I voted for the 3006.  I think it is the best all around cartridge out there.  You can get loads from 110gr-220gr.  And I have 7 rifles in that caliber.

The whole conforming to NATO...and the armed forces use it, it must be the best does not fly.  The 308 is a necked down version of the 1906 .30 cal.  If I am wrong the "experts will roast me".  It is a hell of a round.  Heavy, requires a Battle rifle to fire it, and is extreme overkill in most situations.

But I believe the average 30-06 will destroy and cause more damage than the average 308.  So to answer the post….30-06.

I don't see the big deal.

Both are comparable rounds, just a matter of personal preference.

I'm kinda fond of .308.

The brass is MUCH cheaper and the difference between hot handloads is negligible.

I can go anywhere from 110gr-220gr in a 06 you can't do that with a .308.
