This video is pretty crazy.  The ending is great.  Sometimes you gotta defer to the man of the house.

Wow, amazing shit. The hyena's really kicked some ass in the begining, just swarmed the lions. The seperate footage of the big male lion hammering the hyena was just a no-contest. One on one, I'll take the lions EVERY time....especially a huge male that's 5 times the size of a big hyena. Thanks for the link.

I was suprised that the females backed down, you'd think they would have kicked ass due to that they do most the hunting.

That video is from a PBS special.

They said in it that male lions often hunt for themselves, even when they are in a pride. They also often leave the pride for days at a time.

Male lions without a pride, certainly hunt for themselves.

In the PBS video of the female lions vs. hyennas, they mentioned that the hyennas wouldn't attack when one of the more dominant female lions was around, as if they were able to recognize individual lions.

They also said that hyennas rarely get too close to a male lion, but will harrass from a distance.

Male lions have much more powerful forelegs than the females. The females can run for longer distances at speed than a male. Males can sprint very fast for short distances.

The male lion attacking the hyenna, during the day, in that clip, had just returned to the pride after being gone for several days. The hyennas were harrassing the female lions, and ddidn't realize the male lion was approaching. The hyenna that was taken down was the hyenna queen. The male lion broke it's neck, and left it alive, paralyzed, to die.
