Newegg is fantastic. You can occasionally find better prices elsewhere (xoxnide or somesuch) but on the whole Newegg is a great E-tailer.

New egg was my favorite until they set up shop here in TN. Now I am stuck going to zipzoomfly.com which isnt too bad either.

newegg is good, despite their somewhat cheesy looking website. Accupc is good too, you just have to call a few times to find someone who speaks enough english to take your order.

At Least 2 Hard Drives. #1 System OS #2 Data You will find yourself probably installing Windows Several Times.... storing your Data on a 2nd drives minimizes the agony. Get A Good Mobo... Are you going Intel or AMD? |

Buy from newegg. Just check their reseller rating on www.resellratings.com Personally, I think they are responsible for the near death of business like CompUSA. They just give such a good price that home builders go there for parts.

+1 for www.zipzoomfly.com. Pretty every computer part (with the exception of big and heavy parts like the case) have free shipping, and their prices are usually a couple bucks lower than newegg---and with free shipping. Their service is topnotch, since their website is updated often, and lets you know if something is on backorder and expected date.

NewEgg rocks!!! ZipZoomFly (formerly Googlegear) is excellent too. Monarchcomputer.com here in GA is excellent but don't shop much there due to sales tax, bought a AMD 2100 and they gave me a T-shirt.

AMD XP 3200+ 2.2 ghz Barton core ASUS "A7N8X" nForce2 Ultra 400 (supports dual channel ram) EVGA Geforce 5600 256DDR Corsair 2x512 DDR400 (PC3200) Dual channel Right now with everything I want I'm coming in right under 1000 dollars (Listed above is not everything, I basically have everything I need for a gaming desktop), but I think I may take your advice and get two HDDs... so for the OS all I need is a small HDD and then a larger one for my data, or will that slow my OS down? Great thread guys |

That's what I'm running right now, except I have a weaker video card. For the hard drives, I bought a small fast drive to load the OS on,and three 250 gig drives for storage. |

Newegg and ZipZoomFly are my two primary PC sources. Good prices, great shipping, and excellent service. Sometimes you can find something for a few dollars cheaper from other sources (ZZF, for one) but Newegg's Fedex shipping is outstanding.
There are plenty of tutorials online for first time builders--stick to the ones on the big hardware sites (Hardocp, Anandtech, Tom's Hardware, etc) and you won't go wrong. Other than that, I would suggest also trying some form of Linux in addition to Windows. You may at some point grow tired of the security/viruses/crashes/etc. with Windows, and if you do, Linux is the solution--give it a try in a dual boot configuration. Good Luck |

That's funny, On my current system (Compaq) 1.2 Celeron 512 Pc133 Geforce 2 MX400 Windows XP Pro (Always kept up to date) with Norton 2001 as my antivirus (Always updated) I've never had a crash, but I also backup my essentials, and format once a year over at Sniper_Wolfe's, we make it into a LAN party of sorts. Hopefully my homebuilt system is even more reliable. |

The two drive suggestion given earlier is a good one. I'm glad that XP has been stable for you. The odds are, though, that eventually, Windows will either crash on you, be crippled by a virus or a security breech--that's just the reality of the situation. Having OS on one drive and data on another works as a failsafe just as a dual boot with LInux would. For that matter, if you DO go the two drive route, you could partition the OS drive for XP and the Linux root/swap directories, while drive two would have a partition for XP data and a partition for Linux data. It's just a suggestion, of course, feel free to completely ignore it. |

I've probably spent more $$$ there then I have on my BRD . Their customer service is great . RMA's are handled quickly and usually no questions asked . In fact I'm waiting on an order right now which has only been 2 days and I fully expect it tomorrow . |

Go with the extra harddrive space. You never know when you will need more and the price is low enough where it is worth it. I am sitting here right now listening to the wonderful sound of half terrabyte humming along and I still need more. Backing up your movies and music takes space but it is nice to be able to call them up from anywhere without having to hunt down the cd or the dvd.

I prefer Western Digital 10,000RPM SATA 74 GB Raptors, myself. If you need extra space later you can always buy a big EIDE drive and run it externally via USB or firewire. I try to keep as little as possible on my primary drive. |

I buy almost all my computer related hardware from Newegg, unless there's a deal somewhere else that's just too good to pass up. They have excellent customer service, and shipping is extremely fast. I often times got packages a day or 2 ahead of schedule. I recommend them frequently to others.
