Back-up iron sights in case something happens to his ACOG.  A LOT of guys over there are attaching their carry handle to the handguard for that purpose.

Looks like he has wrapped 550 cord in the grooves on his handguard...

Looks to me like a First Samco handguard with paracord wrapping.

Got me curious now.

TA-55 with the fiber optic.  Much more pricey than the NSN.

PICS OF THE M73 HANDGUARD

Note the front lock down screws.

Also, its a TA31 ACOG, not the TA55.

Well, my question wasn't really about the manufacturer of the handguards... but about the form of rail protection he is using.  Those are not normal ladder protectors... it looks to me like he has wrapped paracord through the grooves in his forearm.  Very good field expedient protection, I think.

I sure wouldnt want to be taking incoming rounds behind that tin cover. I hope their overlook gives them a big advantage in an engagement.

Thanks for the pics Lumpy.

Id be seriously disinclined to believe that nylon paracord would not melt after a mag or two of burst fire.

Although, it does appear to have something around the rail notches.

I think it would take more than a few mags to melt that paracord... but you are right in that with enough sustained fire, the handguards would heat up enough to melt the paracord.

He would be unable to hold the handguard shortly before the paracord started to melt...

Anybody know what the guy on the right has in his left hand?  For a second I thought it looked like an M79 viewed from the top, looking down on the flip-up sight on top of the tube, but unless it was captured, no regular active duty units have these anymore (the last one I saw was at an Army installation in the armory of the DoD security force about 3 years ago).  It appears to have a strap attached to it, but other than that, I can't think of any normal piece of infantry gear that look like this.  Any ideas?

It is an M79

Possibly for anti riot munitions?  The M203 is limited in the length of grenades it can load & some of the newer improved CS (or baton??) rnds are too long for it.  The M79 doesn't have that problem.  Not to mention some people consider the M79 a much better grenade launcher than the m203.

Very cool - I'll have to talk to some 1st Cav guys and see if these were captured or pulled out of mothballs at Fort Hood.  Our former 10th Mountain guy in my office said they don't have any of these left in the Infantry.

I was amazed to see the ones that the DoD security guys had - they only used them about twice a year, and the things looked like museum pieces, they were in such good condition.  What a great old weapon - I would definitely try to hang on to one if I found one up there (for the duration of the deployment, I mean...).
