TV actress held after son hacked to death

A blood-splattered carpet and blood-stained axe on Sunday bore brutal testimony to the horror killing of a two-year-old boy - allegedly at the hand of his mother.

The 26-year-old woman - who has been seen on South African television screens in the top-rated SABC1 soap Generations, as well as the popular sitcom Emzini Wezinsizwa and the SABC2 drama Justice For All - was arrested on Sunday for murder.

The woman is said to have believed that her young son was "possessed by the devil" when she hacked him to death with an axe and gouged out his eyes with a screwdriver.

The horror continued when she then allegedly placed a hot iron on the eyeballs.

The tragic events took place on Sunday morning, after which the woman was said to have remained in the house with the body.

Hours later, relatives and friends found her sitting and singing in her bedroom while her son lay in a pool of blood.

The crime was discovered when a friend, who lives in the house, went to the actress' bedroom and came across the gruesome scene. She said she saw the child lying on the floor with a Bible placed on his head.

The friend then ran to tell the woman's brother, who lives in a room outside the main house.

Still wearing the gloves he put on to clean up his nephew's blood, the woman's brother stood motionless next to the gate as neighbours and relatives streamed to the house to offer their sympathy.

He told how he ran into his sister's bedroom and was shocked to find her singing while her son was lying in a pool of blood.

"His (the baby's) brain was scattered all over the floor and his eyes were gouged out. She had put a hot iron over the tiny eyes," he said.

The actress's aunt said her niece allegedly killed her son because she claimed he was possessed. "It is suspected that the child had HIV, hence she claimed that he was possessed."

A woman is expected to appear in the Soweto magistrate's court on Monday.

The country with the worst reported rate is Botswana or something like that.  It's rate is in the 40%s if The Neutral Observer remembers correctly.  The average reported rate is in the 30% to 40% range.  However, given the state of health care and record keeping down there, just how high it is in reality is anyone's guess.  Undoubtedly it's getting higher every day.

Within 20 years, you'll start seeing the continent self-destruct even more so than it already is, as most of the newly infected are young.  When it starts hitting them before they can breed, the population will sharply drop.

Africa has been dicked from the start.   Crappy natural resources.... Sure they have diamonds and precious metals but those are no way to begin a civilization....  Need timber, freshwater, fertile land, etc.

Their climate and resources didn't allow them to get off the ground and the subsequent meager cultures that sprung up cannot compete, nor do their traditions allow them to compete, with the modern world.

Their numbers will dwindle due to disease and Western-imposed regulation (Like no DDT) until their population is of appropriate size for control/cooperation.   This will most likely spawn socialist/communist entities that thrive on small communities where the system is appropriate.

This scenario is only possible if they stop the inter-tribal warfare.... until that stops, no progress.

BRITAIN has dropped plans to introduce a compulsory HIV test for immigrants applying to come to the UK, amid growing concern that it would fuel illegal immigration and drive the disease underground.

A recent survey showed that Zimbabweans contributed half of new HIV cases in the UK. The plans to test all immigrants had been met with great consternation among Zimbabwean exiles.

The cabinet set up a review of the issue of imported infections earlier this year to investigate whether potential immigrants could be screened for the virus as part of the visa process. It came about because of increasing concerns about how much 'health tourism' is costing the NHS, and the growing rates of HIV among people who have acquired the disease abroad.

But there has been mounting controversy about the idea of making would-be migrants have a mandatory Aids test before they come into Britain. Some ministers have argued that it is inherently racist as it would mostly target Africans from countries with the highest rates of the disease.

Ministers signalled to MPs last week that the plan has now been shelved, although there is not expected to be any official announcement over it.

Africa is a continent that needs the Gospel of Jesus Christ second only to our's.

I'm not sure of the first Christian nation, but I believe the oldest Christian traditions are the various middle eastern remnant sects that have survived Islam in places like Syria and Iraq, the oldest Christian church that is still the dominant religion in it's nation is probably the Coptic Christian church in Ethiopia.

CavVet, I've been to Africa a couple of times, and I've been fascinated by east Africa especially, however it's nearly impossible to deny that west Africa is profoundly troubled and southern Africa seems to be on a last death spiral.

The Ethiopians have been a nation for thousands of years, and they probably will be for centuries to come.  Even the Somalis have a strong sense of nation and people.

I must have misread the articles that said a half million Rwandans were hacked to death in 94 and that South Africa has the highest rate of carjacking and rapes in the world.  It must have also been a typo recently that said 180 women and children were slaughtered in a refugee camp in the Congo.  Oh and I'm sure it was just a fictional article that said that the wife of the president of Zimbabwe moved into a formerly white owned farm and told the farm hands to go and "Live by the river."  I'm also sure that stories coming out of Africa about shanty towns of over a million are just fantasy.  I'm glad that Ethiopia seems to be doing better judging from the pictures, but I think that they are not entirely representative of Africa.

At least the U.S. is doing something right.  At my Green Card physical recently they did test for HIV with a blood test and they perform a chest X-ray to look for active pulmonary tuberculosis.  That is for the tiny minority who decide to immigrate legally anyway.
