I turned 17 that year and the only handgun I had any familiarity with was the M1911A I carried at basic training that summer.

Which is what I carry now and would have carried then. They work, and conceal nicely.

Open carry/woods carry - same as I do now. A 1911a1 or a Hi Power.  Love them both - and they work well, too.

Glocks weren't imported into the US until January 1986. I think that is why OP selected the year 1985.

Remember the 9 sucked then (it sucks slightly less now) and .40 wasn't invented then. 1911s of the time could only feed ball reliably,  plus I don't like them anyway. P220 with flying ash trays please...
