Greatest? Dunno. But they sure were absolutely stunning to see in flight. Such a beautiful aircraft. Very fortunate I was able to get a flight on one once. Ahhhhh the deep rumble of some big radial engines... They did great work for our country in many capacities, and it's cool they are still in use today.

I'd say it's a tossup between the XB-70 and the MiG-31 Firefox

It makes me wonder why this could not be another version of the PBY series of aircraft. I think that USAA operated PBYs to rescue downed bomber crews in the late stages of the Pacific Theater in WWII. |

This one is local to me. I see it flying from time to time.
They sure were a workhorse. RIP Bob. Attached File |

I flew in one of those from Peoria, IL, to Dulles in about 1969. There is a restored one with the Ozark paint scheme.

A guy I car pooled with (a long time ago) got to "fly the Hump" in a C-47 a few times.........he hated it.

I clicked on this thread thinking the OP better say DC-3. Good job.

Quoted: Greatest airplane ever built was the Wright Flyer View Quote Building a scale RC model and seeing how many mods would be required to make it controllable enough to reliably fly, is one of those projects I never got around to. Intentionally building it to be unstable, is something that I think didn't return to the aviation mindset until the military started playing around with fly-by-wire systems in fighters and stealth planes. |

In the top three - DC-3, C-130, and C-17.
I would probably put the C-130 at the bottom of the list. |
|
A very honorable mention. I might even rank it as 2nd greatest. |
