Perhaps this is a nice bit of psyops.  This may make a load of insurgents and terrs get so whacky that they'll attack us and tip their hand, and allow us to wax them.  Also, it may also have the effect of scaring the terrs and insurgents when they see how "horrible" we treat prisoners.

I think it is a conspiracy of Michael Moore and the Dems.  It has the fingerprint of a mockumentary.

This is the most tinfoil hatted explaination of it I've heard:

The right is ignoring this because Abu Ghraid is just a smokescreen.

There are TWO huge scandals coming out of Iraq: one is extremely damaging to our national interest, the other is extremely damaging to Bush. And which one is the media focused on? The Abu Ghraid abuse and torture scandal, which has damaged our national interest perhaps beyond repair. Yet it seems to have left Bush with only slight political damage, in that his base is largely unaffected by it. Rush and O’Reilly and all the others are actually making fun of the charges.

The other scandal? The pullback in Fallujah, turning it over to one of Saddam’s generals. This can only be described as surrender. Allowing the media to focus on this story would be very damaging to Bush’s right wing base. How could he have allowed America to surrender in Fallujah? How could he have stabbed our brave Marines in the back in that way? There is no way that Rush and O’Reilly could spin this into a positive.

So it had to be supplanted. The timing of the Abu Ghraid story was no accident. Rove needed something to get people to “quick, look over there.” Awful as the abuse and torture charges are, they are something that the rightwingers supporting Bush can shrug off. Having the Marines take scores of casualties fighting block by block in Fallujah, and then telling them to pull back so that one of Saddam’s generals can take over was not something the right wingers could shrug off. (Just go over to Tacitus.org to see.) So that story had to go away.

For the left, Abu Ghraid is the scandal, and Fallujah is a tactical retreat showing a rare bit of restraint on the part of the administration.

For the right, Abu Ghraid is an unfortunate and probably inevitable byproduct of war, but Fallujah, once the full ramifications are brought out, would be a craven, cowardly surrender, stabbing our Marines in the back. (Again, go over to Tacitus.) So we haven’t heard much about Fallujah in our SCLM. In fact, since the Abu Ghraid story broke, we’ve gotten very little news from the ground in Iraq.

So what does this mean for the left Blogosphere? Stop focusing on our scandal and our own indignation. Start focusing on their scandal, and stoke up their indignation.
