Just bought a new scanner and thought I would share some pics!

My Team Leader and I blew up a M113 (brand new bombing target), It was getting dark,we had 20 lbs. of C-4 left over and really didn't want to hassle with putting the crap back in our Bunker.  This particular lot of C-4 needed to be disposed anyways due to a bulletin we got about this lot going bad, We figured we could put it to good use!!!!  Coincidently we had just gotten new remote firing devices and we figured to break them in.  We had F'ing problems with the thing and it was dark (Not supposed to do night ops), IIRC the damn thing didn't work (reciever decided to die) and the 20 minutes of time I gave on the time fuse detonated the shot.   We were about 100 meters away (a little close, ya think) behind a nice berm when the buttoned up M113 went up, we didn't know it was full of fuel either until the detonation.  We looked in awe at the HUGE ASS FIREBALL until frag started wizzing by (trust me, we became one with the ground)!  We hear this Big WAH WAH (It was the whole top slab of the M113 going end-over-end), mind you its dark and can't see were this object is going, PUCKER FACTOR 10!!!

It does have some risks, even the most minute mistake can get you killed, also you can do everything right but sometimes Shit Happens!  My fellow tech here, Pathfinder stepped on a mine in Afganistan and got tore up pretty good but thankfully he appears to be doing alright !!!

I am not in the Destruction business anymore, I am now a deranged civilian IT Specialist working for the USAF!  I love it when people ask what I did before and I tell them the Bomb Squad, the look on their faces and usual line "You guys are nuts" is PRICELESS!!!

Or if you see EOD Techs diving for cover, you might want to quickly do the same!

Actually the "if you see me running, you'd  had better catch up." line has actually happened!  One incident that I know about, there was a range clearance being conducted and EOD had some extra Non-EOD bodies assisting (walking line abreast) to spot ordnance on the ground so a following tech could  ID (determine if live or hunk of junk) for the demo team to destroy later!  These non-EOD troops were told in advance if you see a tech running you better follow!  Well this one tech happened to find a Rattler, he was also scared of snakes, so he goes running away full bore!  All the Non-EOD help starts running after him.  There is a tradition in EOD, that debacles such as this, the fine is a Case of Beer!!!    It is very fitting that he voluteered to supply drinks for the thirsty crew!!!

This M113 would have been destroyed anyways, it was in a IMPACT AREA,  either from an A-10 or F-16 with Mk82's/Mk84's.  Yakima's impact area is heavily used for this purpose!  I have seen M-60's literally disappear from direct hits from 2000lb Mk-84 (945lbs Tritonal explosive filler)!

It was also good training, 20lbs of  C-4 is equivalent to a large AT mine or IED that we are seeing in Iraq.  We never got to play with AT mines to see its terminal effects on vehicles.   EOD is sometimes tasked to give an estimate of how much explosives were used in an IED or in an accident.  The destroyed M113 gives a good baseline of what one can expect a AT mine to do to a APC!

Man, all those rifle grenades you are setting to destroy in that pic.....I could have a fun day at the range with them....

I will scan a few more in tonight, I don't have alot of EOD range pics as Digital cameras weren't around, I will post some Nuke pics I took at the Atomic Museaum at Kirkland AFB too.  I have a couple of pics of me at NetOps on a nuke hotline and another of me leading a team with a Radiac in the Thorium seeded training area!
