Ouch. No telling how many old war horses are sitting in closets since the '50s and '60s that have been hacked on.
A guy offered me a Maltby No4 Mk1 that had been butchered all to hell for $450. Told him no thanks. It would take another $450 to get it back like it should be and then it wouldn't be matching. He kept pushing the "But it's an Enfield. They're collectable " Sorry bud, maybe to someone else. |

My mom "lost" it while I was stationed in Germany back in 99... |

Depends on how the mount attaches, if it utilizes the rear sight dovetail and balance screws like some of the old B-Square or S&K “no drills”, you could be in luck.
|
|
.
Take off the scope mount and put sights on it. It will be good as new. . |
|
Only some sweatlord who calls it "book of faces" would bubba that.
|
|
Damn that's sad to see on an M1....if it were an SKS I wouldn't care, those are trash can guns.
|
|
If it's a GI and the barrel is crisp and nothing is drilled I'd go a grand for it. You can always get new or replacement sights for it
I just looked at a Rockola with a shot out barrel (3 on my CMP gauge) a LGS wants 1300 for. |

View Quote Apple's and oranges, yours has a Ultimak tac rail that can come off in 5 minutes (I have one also on one of my Carbine's) The Carbine the op is talking about there is a chance that the rear sight channel is bubba'd. If so then it's a good chance that he can't replace it with a GI spec sight |
|
Many of those bubba'd carbines were done back in the 50s-60s when nobody gave a crap.

My son has an Ivar Johnson Carbine. It shoots fine. He put a red dot scope on it and uses it for hog hunting in the Florida bush.
My WWII carbines stay pristine. |

Can something like that be restored? Remove the scope and replace the iron sights?

If it's really messed up beyond restoration chop it into a VN-style "Enforcer."

OP's gun looks like something from a 70's Charles Bronson action movie. Not as bad as some of the others, though.

View Quote If the "channel" for the rear sight ain't been widen or modified to accept the scope mount then yes. The receiver could also be tapped or drilled for the forward portion of the mount. The other issue is was the "cut" for the keyway for the front sight filled in. You can't tell from that photo. It's one of those deals were the OP is going to have to look at the gun real time to see what the bubba factor is. It nothing has been modified then it's save able. If it's modified as I describe then it's too far gone IMO |

Ugh. Post that here and you'll be ridiculed for life, tires slashed and house burnt to the ground

Hope the carbine did not have the metal permanently altered.
But they werent considered collectible then. See the ad above from1964? A Lee-Enfield was $17, and with a scope it was $44! $27 just for the scope, a 4x Tasco. Today, that scope is practically worthless, but if the Lee Enfield were unmolested, it would be worth so much more. Oh well, can't go back in time. They could never have imagined the things we have today. With my smartphone, I can check Facebook and Tik-tok everywhere! |

Yep, "sporterized". That was big back in the day. I have a sporterized Arisaka in .30-06 and a beautiful scoped Mauser in some weird wildcat round.
I like some of these jobs, if they're well done. The ones above are very nice! I also appreciate the carbine in it's original military configuration. |

Looks like a “no drill” mount that uses a block in the rear dovetail, and the front sights pin on, it’s probably fine.

View Quote A little before my days, but I bought over a half dozen from Southern Ohio Gun and Inter-ordnance for $149 in 1992 when those Korean imports were running through the companies....I bought an Irwin-Pedersen for $400 at the same time. Sold all of them. |
