A Glock OEM 19 mag is $30. You can almost get three Magpul mags for $33. So why again do we hate them?
Link Posted: 1/21/2021 2:35:55 PM EDT
[#1]
Because they suck
Link Posted: 1/21/2021 2:35:57 PM EDT

Because the ar ones work properly, the Glock ones blow as soon as they've been dropped or get any dirt in them

Original AR mags without anti-tilt followers were not fun.

Glock mags are stupid reliable from the factory.

Are Magpul Glock mags 100%? Or 99.9999%?

GLOCK OEM mags make and keep the gun reliable.  Any others seem to struggle with that task.

I've never had any issues with the magpul glock mags but I'm not hard on them.

I have 10 of the magpuls, and they all have been perfect. Just bought 5 more.

Because it's not a great solution to a problem that nobody had or asked for. OEM Glock mags are literally perfection and they're cheap. There is absolutely no reason to use any other mags

It’s not that Magpul Glock mags suck, it’s just that OEMs are awesome and almost the same price.

Original glock mags had problems. Later versions fixed lots of issues.

Generally magpul glock mags are fine for most training/uses. Glock mags are just a higher quality all around and the best option available.

But AR pmags actually work

They are great range toys, cheap, some interesting capacity options.

No one thinks they are anywhere near the quality of the OEM Glock mags.

PMAGs were a generational improvement over USGI at the time, and arguably more durable.

Don't even have Glocks but if you can point me to $9.99 OEM G17 or G19 mags I'm all ears. PM me, so I have a head start on the rubes. Sorry Rubes, not sorry.

magpul are harder to load. seems like more friction or maybe theyre dirty. I don't like the plastic feed lips either.

[#17]
No idea why people hate on them. All the gun guys I've talked to said they were good.

I carry mags that I bought from Polymer80. I'm not entirely sure, but I think they're just OEM mags with different baseplates. Very reliable and I've never had an FTF or double-feed. They ran me $20 when I bought them.

If you're paying $30 for glock mags you're doing it wrong

My average cost for new mags is right around $20, used but definitely functional is $12

I'll take a $12 trade in over magpul any day

I've got a few magpul glock mags. They're generally ok.
The material texture bothers me. It seems like its got juuuuuuuuuuust enough friction to slow mag removal and insertion.

I know that the difference is utterly minimal but the fact that I can sense it just throws me off.

I have a bunch of magpul Glock mags for range and competition use. I don't think I've ever had one malfunction. Now my plate carrier, chl, and oh shit stash are filled with oem Glock mags. Considering I can damn near buy 3x magpuls for the price of one Glock mag I'd be stupid not to stock up on them. They certainly do have their place.

Magpul AK mags REALLY suck.

I've only used the Glock pmags in P80 builds, but from my experience there, they do not reliably feed, especially with light target handloads, while Glock OEM mags run like a top.  I think it's the metal insert in the OEM mags, making it easier to strip off the next round as the metal-to-metal with the case is "slipperier", and the pmags being all plastic have a touch more drag.

I had some problems initially.  Contacted Magpul and they suggested I disassemble and lightly lubricate the inside/internals with CLP.  I was skeptical.   They have been perfect ever since (1000s).

I use the Magpul exclusively for training.  OEM for actual use, etc.

Personally, I have a bunch of Magpul Glock mags that I use just for the range, and I haven't had problems with them. They clearly are lower quality than the Glock mags, though. They just have a gritty feel to them as you're loading rounds, and they're not as smooth feeding as the OEM Glock mags. When I carry, I only use OEM Glock mags.

The Magpul AR mags, on the other hand, are every bit as good as the USGI aluminum mags.

My chest rig is currently configured with 3x 30rd M3 PMAGs and 2x 17rd OEM Glock mags.

See, that kind of advice from Magpul turns me off. I don't have any other mags that require oil on the inside to function perfectly--why should I oil up the Magpuls, then, and attract grit that could potentially inhibit the feeding?

In my limited experience, Magpul mags won’t feed steel cased ammo reliably.
Glock mags will feed anything.

PMags for the AR are as good as any other AR mag. Sure you can buy an HK 416 magazine for $55 but it doesn't do anything better than a PMag. People actually like the ways in which PMags do occasionally fail, because they are easy to identify and won't trick you into thinking you have a good mag when you actually have a deformed one that won't work properly.

PMags for the Glock are second rate compared to OEM magazines. They are less durable due to lacking the steel liner, and reports of reliability are somewhat mixed -- in the sense that 95% positive reports still make them look worse than OEM which are regarded as infallible. Since it is not that much more expensive to get OEM, people get OEM.

If the Glock PMags were $5, or if the Glock OEM mags were $40, you'd see people buying them by the truckload just because why not. But at ~$10 vs ~$20, it's just not compelling.

Edit: put another way. I have seen it said many times that a good magazine is the most important component of pistol reliability. Likewise, Glocks are widely believed to be among the most reliable pistols, and established this reputation years ago using almost exclusively OEM magazines. So the OEM magazines have a reputation for being extremely reliable and durable, and they only cost $20 or so. Would this be a market that you would want to enter as a competitor?

For years I would buy a few when I could get them at $9.99 each. I have 10 or so in rotation with my Glock factory mags and frankly I have had no issues. I probably have 40 of the 15 rounders and considering what I paid for them I have no regrets at this point in time.

In my experience, the Glock pmags are sometimes more difficult to load with steel case ammo than the factory magazines. But that's perfectly fine for me for plinking and training.

Same thing with checkmate mags. They are the usgi supplier and the gold standard for the M1A/'M14. The rest of their product line is junk. Use what works.

Glock mags were easy to find for $18 each up until recently. That ship might have sailed.

I have 8 of the Magpul Glock mags. They work fine for range use, but I'm not gonna use them for carry.

To answer OP, PMag gen 2 and 3 AR15 mags are well vetted by professionals in the harshest conditions. The Magpul Glock mags aren't.

I have found this to be the rule.  My glock pmags hate steel ammo and combined with cold temperatures, because I live in North Dakota and it gets colder than fuck here, they are not trustworthy.

AR Pmags are 100% reliable in these arctic temps.  Go figure.

Pipe down troublemaker. Don’t harsh the mellow of the hoard that is just trying to join the Cool Kid 1st Tier Operator Club.

Don’t you know? If you don’t say the right words, if you don’t follow the leaders, if you don’t fall lockstep in believing and repeating the Cool Kid mantra, you will be shunned.

Shame on you!

That means you are overpaying for glock mags.

The oem Glock mag is ultra reliable. Plenty of people here have had issues with the magpul glock mags and they aren’t as reliable.

Thus two unreliable mags are not worth as much as 1 reliable mag.

I like the magpul glock mags they work great in my AR9.  Ive shot a couple thousand rounds through the 10 i have and they always work.  Ive dropped them on concrete and in dirt with no issues.
