Buddy called me with this question. Man had an American Arms 22 in a boot pocket covered by his jeans on the outside.  They went in a casino in LA, sit down in the restaurant and a guy comes and ask him to leave because he had a weapon on him. Fella says there was NO way no one saw this pistol. Are they xraying you at the door? If so I am "sure" its legal????? This did happen. They left.

Do they have security at the door?  If so they didn’t see it then?

I’d bet some guy in the camera room happened to see the guys pant leg ride up or printing on his pant leg. Who knows where they got cameras and I’d bet they got them under tables giving lots of good vantage points.

Yes, they probably have an xray type machine detecting firearms and knives.  A casino has the money to spend on new tech like that.

Another thought because of the old school shoe roulette computers, and maybe magnet detectors for the same reasons they might have metal detectors around the base of the tables. It might have picked it up.

Then their assumption when they get a hit is a gun, if the person denies a gun they move on to cheating reasons.

Be pretty hard for this little gun to print through leather and denim. We are not private anymore.

Technology exists, casinos have the $$.

You'll likely not get a straight answer as they like to keep their security measures close to the vest. I worked in that world and theres some very advanced stuff and big minds behind it.

lol they're not x-raying at the door.  Regardless of what your buddy told you someone saw something or he ran his mouth, end of story.

Local Casino had some big roller come in with a body guard.  Someone just happened to notice the pistol under the bodyguard's jacket as he was standing behind his client at the table.  Hours after being there.

Another dude was playing slots all day and bent over to pick up something he dropped and surveillance just happened to be looking and saw the butt of his revolver sticking out.

That's how they catch people carrying guns in casinos, these weren't little podunk mom n pop or small tribe casinos, some of the biggest names.

Source: knew people in Security and Surveillance.

A quick search brought back numerous hits.  Here is the first...

ViewScan is the most technologically advanced passive walkthrough Concealed Weapons Detection System. Its easy-to-use, PC-based software displays and tracks those who are carrying threat objects. ViewScan's sensor technology accurately detects the location and number of threat objects such as knives, guns and razor blades, while ignoring personal artifacts like coins, keys and jewelry; it can also detect and locate threat objects which have been covered or masked with materials such as aluminum foil, lead and plastic.

Every person safely passing through the portal is scanned and can be archived with the following data: snapshot image of the person, date and time, threshold settings, sensor readings, graphical display. Archiving can be controlled at the workstation with the flexibility to monitor anyone entering or leaving a building including after hours.

He was being sarcastic.

Also Casinos are regulated by the State Gaming Commission, and State law.  I have never heard of a Federal "regulation" banning carrying of guns in a Casino, that's State.

Think about what you have to do at an airport for an xray machine to work... hands up, stand still, etc. Its not something you just walk thru, and the tech isnt advanced enough to make it hidden inside a door frame.

The simplest answer is that someone saw it. His pants rode up at some point. Probably in the parking lot getting in or out of his vehicle

Yep.  There's no way they could get away with subjecting people to x-ray exposure, but microwaves and millimeter wave is fair game.

Someone saw it and reported it.

I work in the industry and no casino in LA currently has any scanning tech at the doors other then a regular metal detectors.

Either someone saw it and ratted him out to Security or Surveillance caught a glimpse.

I worked in the Vegas casinos for a few years after I graduated college, specifically Caesars Palace and Wynn.

At caesars I did a stint in Risk Management where I had pretty much free reign on going anywhere and everywhere in the hotel, casino and restaurants.  I can tell you there were several “areas” that I was not allowed in that I can only assume were security areas that they were incredibly strict about.

One area I dealt a lot with were incidents and fights where we had to review video footage of what happened. There are different levels of security cameras in the casinos. The ones I were exposed to and used were NOT the “eye in the sky” security cameras that the big boys use.

I say all that to echo what others have said - the casinos have money and technology. I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if they have some sort of X-ray / fire arm detector crap going on.

In Louisiana, regularly CCW several pocket knives into over five casinos and never a problem.

Have yet to enter gaming floor with concealed firearm though.

If you are not protecting yourself in Louisiana casinos then its your funeral.  The crime reports ARE BEING hidden (3 documented cases involving me and my friends) from public reporting.

Casino security technology is GREATLY exaggerated.  You can go into lots of Vegas casinos and still see ancient cameras hanging from the ceiling of many of the older joints.  Hardly cutting edge tech.  All casino security depends on striking the balance of cost and the appearance of intrusion for the guests.

Here's what really happened:

1)  Your buddy drew attention to himself one way or another.  Maybe he did something or maybe he just looks like a certain kind of guy that draws attention.  Either way, he's no gray man.

2)  Casino security decided to have a closer look and zoomed in on your buddy with a PTZ camera.  They saw that your buddy was printing or his gun was exposed wall moving, sitting, or otherwise.  They can do that much with 90s era PTZ cameras just fine.

3)  They came over and confronted him and asked him to leave.

LAPD was using this xray tech to view people coming on/off the train.

After the vegas shooting, casinos started looking for weapons on people and luggage.

So if they are using microwaves to detect the item, wouldn't a Faraday bag prevent that as they wouldn't penetrate the bag to ping off the item and return a signal?

I'm certainly no tech wizard, but I wonder.

In my experience some people are allowed to carry at casinos.

in. The early 2000's, I saw Winky Wright (pro boxer)  playing craps at a table with his entourage. He lifted up his shirt at one point and was clearly carrying a handgun. No one said anything.

I've seen the video surveillance rooms in some casinos here and it's pretty amazing.  One casino security manager told me there was no place on the floor they couldn't put four cameras on.

But, I don't know of any practical way to detect a pistol like that. However, when it comes to electronic surveillance, a year is a really long time, progress wise.

But, I've carried my pistol in every casino down here (but never gambled) just to eat, and I've never been detected.  But, then maybe it's something at the tables that picked it up.
