That sucks.
USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, and the third ship of the United States Navy to bear the name.[2] She was named in honor of John Paul Jones' famous frigate, which he had named in French "Good Man Richard," in honor of Benjamin Franklin, the U.S. Ambassador to France at the time; "Richard" is derived from Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanac. No word yet on the cause of the fire. Several sailors are being treated for various injuries, including at least one injury from an explosion, according to a tweet from SDFD. View Quote Mischief afoot? |

In reading the reddit thread it doesn't sound like things are going well. Pretty active fire.

The nuclear sub USS Miami was severely damaged (and eventually never repaired) because a painter decided to set a fire inside the sub - because he wanted time off, and had already used all his vacation and sick days. |

Good chance somebody was welding and set something off on the other side of a bulkhead. I was on the Essex LHD2 from 92 to 94 and recall their were extremely strict protocols for any type of welding on board. Had to have a fire guard and show the on-duty damage control officer exactly what they were going to be welding etc. You just did not crank up the welder and get to it.
That's really sad to see. I hope it can be saved. |
