Random deep thought of the evening...
If you were transported back in time to 17th century Europe, and were brought before the king/queen/ruler, what skills/knowledge could you share that would prove you were from the future? Before anyone asks, the OP is stone cold sober; this random thought came to me while jogging this morning. Ready...go. Edit: You're going with no prior notice, and you arrive naked as Arnold in the opening of T2. |

Memorize past eclipse dates before going back. Predict major historical events with great accuracy. Take Wi-Fi with me and my iPhone.
Well, am I transported with whatever I have on me?
In that case I have a phone full of pictures and videos even without internet. I have a 9mm pistol using cased ammo. I have a multi tool made of stainless steel. I have a wallet with photos. Any of these things alone should impress a monarch in the 1600s. |
A completely pointless question, you would be seized, accused of sorcery and witchcraft and probably executed case closed.
The 1600s were a shitty time for witches (accused or otherwise) in Europe. If you were stuck there, it'd probably be best to not rock the boat, ya know.
Nothing too wild. Don't want to be accused of witchcraft.
Probably knowledge of modern firearms and munitions, etc. Warfare shit would make you a valuable man. Throw in some engine and mechanical knowledge that is easily understood and demonstrated. After I established my bona fides as a "scientist" I would branch out into medical stuff. Got to go gradually. |

I know a lot of modern chemistry so I would be burned as a witch at the stake.

Jump start the industrial age with water power.
Design the minie rifle and a training program for light infantry and riflemen. Invent the percussion cap and caplock rifle. Small pox inoculation Sterilization of wounds with alcohol. Start a semaphore system for communication. Hell, invent paper currency, start a bubble, get rich and flee to Switzerland. |

The Boat Of A Million Years.
Hanno's audience with Cardinal Richelieu is fascinating. |

View Quote It's a common misconception that the people back then were dumb. They were not. They just didn't have the mountains of established science and discoveries that we have to stand on. The discovery process was slow. If you could jump start that, very smart people would work on the ideas. |

That's the thing. You don't have to know exactly how to do it. All you have to do is introduce the knowledge of vaccination, bacteria, viruses and have a basic understanding of how it all works. Same with many other technologies like flight, internal combustion engines, etc. You don't have to be an expert. Unleash the basic theory and let people get to discovering. It's a common misconception that the people back then were dumb. They were not. They just didn't have the mountains of established science and discoveries that we have to stand on. The discovery process was slow. If you could jump start that, very smart people would work on the ideas. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

BTW, George Washington had the Continental Army inoculated against small pox. Cut open the patient's skin and insert a small piece of scab. Bandage up.
Sinks/latrines for camps. Must be away from housing or cooking areas. Boiled horsehair for sutures (it's sterilized). Teach hygiene to soldiers. |

How do you make guncotton?
Cotton soaked in nitrates and what else? Make a boiler? Steam engine? How about inventing indoor plumbing. No more necessaries (outhouse) or chamber pots. |

First, why would I want to prove I was from the future to some European king?
If it was the late 1700s, I'd be doing everything I could to reach and convince the founding fathers I was and tell them about the BS that's going on today. Have them spell some things out Barney style. Amendment 1 " Without exception, the people have the freedom of speech" Amendment 2 "The people have the right to own and bear any and all arms" Amendment 3 "The U.S. Treasury shall mint all federally recognized currency, and all responsibilities of the currency shall fall on the U.S. Treasury." Amendment 4 "The U.S. government shall not mint any currency not backed by a material asset." Amendment 5 "Islam is the only religion banned from this nation, no other religion shall be, and there shall never be a state religion" Amendment 6 "The state language shall be English." Amendment 7 "Non-citizens do not have the rights of citizens" Etc. Or something similar. |
