hey guys/gals. been real busy with stuff but just wanted to show off what i made my girlfriend for christmas. it is a jewelry box that i built using birdseye maple and walnut. the box and tray are reinforced with maple keys. the dividers are made from walnut and maple. i think it turned out pretty good. the pictures do not do it justice. she was pretty happy with it. think she liked the necklace that i gave her even more.

Well done! I got a table saw and miter saw for xmas so I've been a wood-workin' AR hobbyist for a few days now.

Where did you get the plans for it? i have a few different 'box making' books. dont remember the exact name of the one i got the basic design out of. i did alter the sizes a little and used my own wood combinations. it wasnt an exact copy of someone elses design. this was the first time i used 'bridle joints' to make a lid. was kind of a PIA but they will be strong as hell. |

Most of the guys here should take a lesson from this.
Here's a guy that not only put his hands to work, but also put a lot of thought into it. It really is the thought that counts. I'd love to get something like that... 'cept it'd have to be book shelves because I wouldn't have enough jewlry to fill that thing up but I have plenty of books! I'm jealous! |

here are a few christmas presents i made a couple years ago. just some bowls and candy dishes. wish i had more time to make more. what sucks is all i got are the photos and some of my screw-ups. everytime i make something i give it away or my mom confiscates it. [:)] she has a couple of my bowls through out her home.

Quoted: Any books you could suggest to get me started making things like that? there are so many good ones available it would be hard to pick. each one i have read i have learned something different. i try to use them as a guide or to inspire ideas. most of the books give step by step directions. go to a woodworking store or a good book store and leaf through a couple. find something that you want to make and just go for it. the only way to learn is to just jump in and try. i am by no means a professional. i just enjoy trying and i take pride in doing that. usually i end up with something im proud of. sometimes i end up with more scrap. [:)] the segmented bowls are a lot of fun. most of the work is in the cutting of all those damn pieces and gluing them up. once i finally get to the lathe im scared im gonna blow it up and waste all that prep work. when you you do finally part it off your lathe it is very rewarding. try here for a start. i learned a lot from this site. he has plans for making the jigs and stuff. very good site. i printed out a lot of the stuff and used it to get me started.

I haven't done any woodworking in a couple years. Last thing I built was a basic end table out of pine. Legs and rails with mortice and tenons. These things are awesome and it took me forever to find them after seeing them on some woodworking show. Nothing fancy, just a light-colored stain with a few coats of poly-u smoothed out with 000 steel wool. PE and I found a nice hardwood place and I think I'd like to redo the top out of maple or some other light-colored wood. dvd, looks good. i made a table similar to that but i left it rough. it holds my dewalt planer. [:)] you are crafty too. its fun when you think of something that would be nice or make your life easier and then you make it happen. your range cart is a great example. nice simple and very functional. saves you trips i am sure. i am currently remodeling my house. when i get it done i think im gonna make some nice endtables and a coffee table for my livingroom. hope i get to it. [:)]
cold_warrior, i would think purple heart would be very nice. it is very hard. its a little difficult to work with becasue it is so hard. its tough on your tools and bits 2. i think it would look sweet though. thanks for all the compliments guys. |
