I absolutely think TiVo is the best thing since sliced bread. It does have me wondering how many others have one.

It's like a VCR, but much better.

- If you like to watch a particular program, you just enter it into your TiVo. Every time it comes on, TiVo will automatically record it for you.

- If you are watching live TV and you need to take a leak, you just hit pause and the program stops. Return and watch at your leisure. If you didn't catch what was said or you would like a replay, you just rewind it and watch it again.

- After awhile, TiVo will get an idea of the sort of programming that you like. If it sees a similar program, it may record it for you.

I stopped watching the "big" networks in 1997 thanks to getting DirecTV.

I got a Sony DirecTV/Tivo unit in 2000 and have never looked back. Total control over what, when and how I view TV.

No commercials, no being a slave to the one eyed monster.

The TV is P0WNED in my home, not the other way around.

The broadcasters are just now catching on to the fact that Tivo and other PVR's are radically changing the viewing habits of a LOT of people, they're scared but can't seem to admit that there is a train wreck looming for their business model. Gee, sounds a lot like the recording industry, doesn't it? [:D]

It truly does change your life.

I second DirecTiVo. I tried to resist getting a TiVo for so long... all my friends were getting them and raving about them, and I just rolled my eyes. Now, I kinda forget everybody doesn't have one. I'll tell someone about a show, and to just set their TiVo to record it and when they say they don't have TiVo I'm just floored... WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYBODY NOT HAVE A TIVO??? WHY?

Don't have TiVo, but have DishPlayer... great unit, we love it... New Years Eve, 2001 we're watching around, and stop on Tom Brokaw (If I recall) and he announces "Now we're going to President Clintons ranch in Ireland" - Then they went to Pres. Bush's ranch in Texas. I just about fell out of my chair - with out this unit, I could not have been sure, but I played the thing back 4 times just to make sure, and my wife was laughing her butt off every time we played it.

Love it, yeah - the only feature I'd add is watch another channel while recording - but I hear the new version has that, so someday soon...

AS for Brokaw, I think some one inputting to the teleprompter was having fun with him ...

Ive got the two tuner dish PVR and love it. I can record two seperate programs while watching a third....

I have UltimateTV for my satellite.
$200 and $100 rebate = $100 for the unit.

If you don't have one, you are missing the best piece of electronic equipment since the invention of the television.

I have the DVR from my cable company, does most everything a TiVO does, and yup, I cannot imagine life without it. Much like broadband, one you have such a thing, there really is no option of going back. Ever.

My wife can watch a recorded show and still tape two other shows with one unit and this still is not enough for her. May have to purchase another unit.

I just bought one of the cheaper 40GB Hughes (DTV) TiVO's this past weekend.

It's pretty sweet, although I don't like how it automatically records shows that it "thinks" you might like.

Another thumbs up for Directivo. Very cool. Now if I could just figure out how to connect to my laptop so I can burn DVDs I would be happy. It is a quest.

It takes a while to figure out what you like. Go through all the channels and give thumbs-up & thumbs-down to various shows. The more data it has, the better choices it makes. You can always turn off the automatic suggestion recordings.

When I first had mine, I gave a couple thumbs up to a couple John Wayne movies. All it did for the next week was record John Wayne movies on its own. Now it's pretty good and often have several episodes of Tales of the Gun, Mail Call, Modern Marvels, Cops, etc just in case I want to watch any of them.

One thing I would like to see is an option to record the latest airing of a new episode. Stuff on Discovery and the History Channel will often air at 8-9pm then again at 1-2am. I don't need to watch or record it at 8pm, just want it recorded at some point. A preference on when to record something new if multiple airings are available would be handy.

If you don't like it just go into the settings and turn it off.

BTW, if you know a little about computers you can upgrade the 40GB hard drive to two 160GB hard drives and end up with 243 hours of recording time in the DirectTivo. Check out the upgrade forum at [url]http://www.tivocommunity.com[/url]

I upgraded my 14hr TiVo to a 40hr model and then sold it. Pretty easy to do. Just hook up the existing TiVo hard drive and the new hard drive to your computer, boot up with the downloadable/burnable CD-ROM & software, copy the drives and install the new one.

Isn't there an option to record first runs of shows that air multiple times?

OT: Anybody recording the SAS: Are you tough enough show? A bit more realistic of a "reality" show.

When you set up a Season Pass, one of the options is to record only first runs of new episodes. You just can't say when to record it if it is on multiple times in a certain time period. I'd rather have it record it at 2am when everyone is asleep.

Thanks. I haven't gone through all the options yet. I didn't even know it was recording stuff until last night. I sat down to watch a show I recorded last night and the program list was full of crap that I would never watch. (only have had the TiVO for about 4 days)

I hate to admit it but I think my wife has a better handle on the Tivo thing than me.

Tivo is kinda like upgrading your internet service to DSL. Once you get used to it there is no going back.

Yes. The subscription, $12.95/mo, is for the data of all the upcoming TV shows. Without the subscription, it basically works as a VCR and you have to set everything up manually. It would still be worth it without the subscription IMHO.

Edited to add: The newer TiVos have a USB connection in the back that you can plug a USB network adapter into and it can download your subscription data over the Internet rather than dial-up. I still have mine on dial-up because I'd have to get wireless adapters to give it access to the network and that's a bit much too spend at the moment. Besides, the dial-up is a local call and it works just fine.

I had had my Tivo about a year when a good T-storm came through and fried my modem. I bought an Ethernet card from 9th Tee, installed it, hooked it up to my network, and it's been pulling updates over the Internet ever since.

From what I read on the boards, apparently the modem is pretty weak and susceptible to getting fried.
