Ever see "Uncle Buck"?

A .45 sounds very distant when driving at 70mph, even when fired at like 30 feet away.  Mostly because you are moving, and kinda "leaving the sound behind".

However, if the two cracks were that close in time, that isn't a typical "new car" sound unless it is decellerating (not what you described).

Personally, I would have returned fire, however, in your location, that would be illegal.  (well, in most all locations, but especially yours....)

he was a "ricer" thinking he's cool... with 3" exhaust on an engine no bigger than a bottle of pop, because of backpressure issues... the exhaust POPS, is that posible??

This is Kalifornia man! Nobody out here owns guns!

I dunno about it though, when you think about it, it shouldnt backfire TOO loud. Cars of the earlier days that had V8's and less restrictive exhaust systems were known to back fire and sometimes mimic a gun shot. Think about it. California, Saturn (4 cylinder engine) emission control (cat converter) the tiny ass restrictive exhaust system. SHOULDNT have been backfire if you were driving at freeway speeds.

You gotta love it when you see those cars with the 3" exhaust tips clamped onto the end of 1.75" pipes "because it returns some horsepower". [rolleyes]

As stated above a low backpressure exhaust combined with a gas pedal lift (possibly lifts gas to down shift) can cause popping. The extra fuel in the cylinder is passed into the cat and can ignite causing pops. Many cars big or small do this. Many of the ricers who have no understanding of car performance think that bigger is always better in exhaust systems (never true except forced induction). A proper exhaust is tuned for a specific engine size and rpm.

Sound isn't going to be quieter because you are at a specifc speed. Unless you are traveling near or above the speed of sound. You are definetly not leaving the sound behind. The sound may seem quieter because your inner ear slowly adjusts to block out constant sound. Since driving a vehicle is regularly pretty noisy, your ears become far less sensitive. Thats why when you get into a car after having been out of it for a while the stereo seems loud initially.

I don't know about Saturns backfiring, but I'm sure it's happened to Uranus!  [rofl2]  [rofl]
