How can you tell a cast reciever from forged?  Buddy of mine is thinking about buying an AR and doesn't want a cast reciever upper OR lower.

Buy a Bushmaster or a Colt.  They NEVER use castings.

Some other companies also don't do castings.

Olympic has both.  

Go to a gun store and ask to see examples of cast (Oly Plinker) and forged (higher priced models) and see for yourself.  There's no doubt when you see the differences for yourself.

This topic has been beat into the ground in the AR discussions, but here are some easy ways to tell a forging from a casting.

Forgings:
Stamped letters into the aluminum

Smoothed rounded edge around the bottom of the mag well

Stampings:
The letters are raised out from the receiver

The edge on the bottom of the mag well will be a semi-circle instead of a smooth contour.
