WALKERTON, Ind. -- A Starke County man accidentally shot and killed himself while getting out of his truck with a loaded shotgun Tuesday.

Charles Brownlee Sr., 53, of Koontz Lake was leaving his truck when the shotgun he was carrying discharged a deer slug into his head, state conversation officers said.

Brownlee was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident near Walkerton, about 20 miles southwest of South Bend.

Investigators believe Brownlee had pulled off a road to shoot a deer.

Sounds like a poacher to me.

I'm just looking my Mossberg 590A1. How the hell do you "accidentally" manage to get the muzzle pointed at your head and your finger on the trigger? I'd have alarm bells screaming in my brain if any longarm ever got near that configuration in my hands.

Only thing I can figure is that the shotgun was leaning towards him from the passenger side of the truck as he was reaching to take it out, and he grabbed it in an unsafe manner. Any way you slice it, this guy was a tool. That muzzle should never have been even remotely pointing at any part of his body.

Can only speculate, but 2 most likely senarios are:

1. shot-gun was stored behind the seat or in gunrack, apparently with barrel point toward the drivers side and obviously loaded, driver steps out of truck reaches behind seat or up to gun-rack, pulling shotgun out by barrel, trigger hangs on something, boom! dead poacher.

2. (more likely) shot-gun setting barrel up, in passenger seat, stock on floorboard, as driver exits door, he reaches back to grap shot-gun by forend, pulling firearm out after him and crossing non-existant brain material with muzzle, trigger hangs on floorboard material or console material, boom!, instant "GOOD" poacher.

I had an uncle in PA with disabilities and could hunt from the car.

Or, was it suicide? Dress up for hunting, pull of road, shoot self in head in awkward position. Family still gets insurance money for accidental death.

I'll give a STRONG vote for mr_wilson's #1 scene as something very similar happened when I was young(35+ years ago)
My grandfather had his 308 semi in the gun rack of a truck. Drove over an old knocked down tree and jarred the rifle(hook of rack between trigger and gaurd) and sent 2 rounds thru the passenger side of the cab, behind the door. Very dumb,as it was loaded, chambered and safety off. Only good thing was that my grandmother and I were riding on the tailgate.
So, it can happen.

In CA we would charge the deer with homicide, then make a TV movie, then pass a law against deer loitering.

You can roadhunt in KS, but cannot carry a loaded firearm with you, and you cannot shoot from the vehical, unless you are disabled and have special permit.

And I roadhunt sometimes, always along land I have specific permission to hunt on. No this drive randomly arround the state till I see something.

I would at least look at suicide as possible.
If he was hunting, during deer season and had tags and it is legal to road hunt and hunt from a vehicle the reason to get out is simple if the deer was on the other side of the road.
Say your West bound and right handed, what if the deer was on the North side of the road?

Pretty common actually, they pick it up by the barrel and pull it out of the vehicle. Knew of one guy that put a 7mm magnum round thru his gut a few years back.

Did have one gangbanger shoot himself in the chest with an SKS the same way, pulling it out of the trunk to shoot up a rival's house.
