Has two knobs inside one for delay and one for sensitivity. A large black one on the outside that has a "click" on it when turned. No matter how I set it, no get dark.

ETA I used the Sun.

It takes a bright enough light to engage the darkness.
Link Posted: 8/21/2017 11:30:24 AM EDT
[#2]
It's auto darkening... needs the light from starting an arc or other bright things to go dark.

Serious?

Go look at something bright. Should darken.

Put it on, go outside and look at the sun

the big knob sets the shade, the sensitivity sets when the helmet goes dark and the delay adjust how quickly it goes dark.

You need to crank the sensitivity all the way up. It still may not trigger the lens though.

Make sure you are on shade 13 or 14

I have to set mine in the sun for a few seconds to get it to work

I brought my fixed shade today because i wasn't sure if just the sun would trigger my auto helmets. But my fixed is a shade #10. I think ill be fine

Aim a TV remote at the solar cell part.  It should turn black them.

I tried mine yesterday. To get it to darken for the sun you need the sensitivity turned to Max.  The outside knob is likely the darkness setting.

Sun should trigger it. If it doesn't turn up sensitivity. Strobe lights on the cranes at work set mine off.

Typically better helmets won't be triggered by the sun.  If I look at the sun with either my Jackson or Miller they may darken for an instant but then revert back to clear.  They're designed that way so you can weld in odd positions and not have the sun trigger the shade and thus obstruct the view of the area to be welded.

The issue with my auto is that a sudden change (like a stobe) will trigger it, but not keep it on.  I needed to set it to Max sensitivity for the sun to keep it on. I'm concerned that there 20% remaining sun will not be enough.  I'll know soon...

Nope.

14 is the recommendation.  Shade is cumulative, though, so a really dark pair of sunglasses would add more protection.

I still wouldn't do it.

When was the last time you used it?  Most lenses uses the arc flash to charge the batteries in the lens.  The batteries may be shot if you let them completely drain.  Some of the cheaper lenses are throw aways, you can not replace the batteries.

I use the spark from a lighter to test an auto darkening lens if it does not have a dedicated test button.

The auto darkening masks will trigger when held up to any florescent light. Only triggers that way when held close. Quick way to test before you start an arc.

That's my plan as well.  The "experts" say at least a 12 is required for no-harm viewing.

As far as the OP's hood, I'd check batteries.  Big flat watch type batteries if they are the type that can be changed.  Sensitivity = High, Delay = Low.  Delay is so a welder can see his arc start, and sensitivity is so the shop lights don't dark you out.  Neither situation is a problem for eclipse viewing.

Turn it on first.  Mine flashes once when you turn it on so you know it is working.

Delay typically sets how long the hood remains dark after the arc is extinguished.

There is no On/Off switch, get a cheap Bic lighter and see if the lens reacts to the spark.  If no, the batteries are dead or the lens is shot.  Been awhile since Snap-on used scantily clad women on any of their stuff, can't even get the calendars anymore unless the Snappy dealer orders their own.

Turn all the dials to the right and try it. If that doesn't work, the batteries are dead.

If this it it, it's solar power with battery backup. Lay out in the sun for a bit and see if the batteries charge up. The thingy on the top right side is the solar cell(s)
