Daredevil climber makes history as the first to scale Yosemite's famed 3,000-ft El Capitan mountain - without a single piece of safety
gear
  • Alex Honnold has scaled the 3,000-ft El Capitan in Yosemite without a rope
  • He's the first to 'free solo' climb - which means to scale it without any safety rope - the intimidatingmountain
  • Any false move or slip could have sent the 31-year-oldclimber plummeting to his death
  • El Capitan is higher than the world's tallest sky scraper but Honnold scaled it in under four hours on Saturday
  • Honnold was also the first to free climb Mexico's El Sendero Luminoso route and
is the only person to have climbed the Yosemite Triple crown without a
    rope
  • The climber, who reportedly lives out of his van to focus on climbing, said he had to master his fear
before facing his life-long dream of scaling El Capitan
  • Honnold's achievement was filmed for an upcoming National Geographic documentary, titled Solo

A professional climber - and star of National Geographic's upcoming documentary Solo - has made history as
the first to ascend Yosemite's famed El Capitan mountain completely rope
free.Alex Honnold scaled the 3,000-ft vertical ascent - which is higher than the world's tallest sky scraper
Burj Khalifa - in just under four hours, on Saturday the magazine revealed. The 31-year-old, who camped over the night before in the Californian
national park, began his climb at 5.32am PDT on Saturday. Honnold had
little more than the clothes on his back, and a small bag of chalk for
his hands, as he scaled the cliff face.

Damn. I was just asking myself what I should do this weekend. "free solo El cap" was third on my list.

Oh well. First and second were surf GD.

Maybe, but he's been doing this for well over a decade.

Watch the documentary on him.

Lack of normal amygdala function may let him live a while longer.

He must have a death wish.  However, he must be extremely strong to make that climb in the manner in which he did.  I will give him his due for being very strong, but he is still a fool in my eyes.

I don't think death wish is the right term. I have never gotten the feeling that he wants to die, he simply doesn't let the fear of death come between him and what he wants to do.

He mentions being freaked out in certain situations, but he's apparently able to keep his calm much better than 99.999% of humans.

I remember seeing some YouTube a few years ago of some other guy speed free climbing what I thought was el cap. Cameras were placed along his route and there were a few 'no hands' moments as he transitioned across the route.

I thought this had been done before, what am I conflating it with?

That was great work at the time.

For perspective.  That's a 400' 5.7 route.  The route Alex climbed is a 5.12 or 5 grades harder and about 7.5x as long.

I think that he is too young to realize that shit that he doesn't control can go sideways and cost him his life.

Not all risks and hazards are related to his personal skill.

Watched some videos of Alex Honnold a few years ago. He's so relaxed and focused that it was weird. Something definitely clicks in his head when he's climbing. He goes someplace else. Some type of dysfunction for sure. If he hadn't found climbing the guy would be a serial killer.

I also remember being impressed at how little energy he expended during the climb. Zero unnecessary clenching of anything. Efficient.

Osman died at the age of 35.  Oddly enough, it was a rope failure that led to his death.

Dan Osman's fatal jump Nov 23,1998

ETA:  Maybe not really odd, if you consider what he was doing with those ropes.

and shit like THIS is why everyone loves Honnlove.

What are you going to do this afternoon?

I’m probably going to hang board.

You’re going to go do a hang board workout?

I mean, in a bit, yeah. I mean I want to eat some lunch, I want to get in the shade and then I’m probably going to hang board in a bit. I am perfectly warmed up, I just did four hours’ light exercise, you know?

A normal person would probably take the afternoon off after they free-soloed El Cap.

But I’ve been trying to hang board every other day, and it’s the other day.
