Currently mine is attempting to crunch an image that is ~58 million pixels wide and 12 thousand tall

I'm pretty sure the damn thing is going to catch on fire. Still, it's slowly plugging along. Not bad for a 7 year old computer with an i3 processor. Btw, it's a photo of the entire visible Brooks mountain range taken from the UAF campus.

Anything crazy you guys put your computers through?

Edit: Photoshop completely locked up. Not like I could have stopped it anyhow.

Finally finished crunching the image. Down to 156kx5300 now

Now it's downscaling again to 50k x 3k

Some bullshit cmyk .tiff files in the 90's on a p60 with win 3.1 & photoshop 2.5.1. I had to save every 5 minutes and wait 3 Minutes for the save. Then someone said 'use .psd's dumbass!' Awesome, now I only have to save every 10 min with 2 min save.

When I was running windows 98 I played Deus Ex.

I was messing with cheat codes and did

"spawn lam 9999"

basically it spawned 9999 grenades and they all exploded at the same time.

It crashed my computer.

I did nuke a system partition on an HP-UX box once. Details are a bit fuzzy now -- I guess I was trying to expand it or something. Was updating the OS and Pro/E I think.

It was a long evening getting that back together, but it was up and running before morning.

ETA IRIX had this little command line utility, "speak" or "say". When I'd notice one of the other co-op's using the terminal I'd telnet in and have it say shit like "I've asked you not to touch me like that, please be gentle with the key strokes".

When I was a kid and you had to use command line prompts my mom got a good deal on flopy disks but they were not formatted so she had me formatting a shitload of disks for her and I eventually formatted the c: drive instead of the floppy drive

Built a distributed modified version of Conway's game of life where each cell got a random string "genome" that got run through a modified BrainFuck interpreter on each pass, and depending on the output would get extra clock cycles. Rewards for things like copying itself into an adjacent cell. Random permutations of the genome based on some tweakable probabilities every pass kept it interesting.. until I got bored.
