OK, the kid is 28 years old. At 22, he graduated a major university honors program magna cum laude. He is multilingual. For the past six years, he has worked in Colorado at resorts (seasonal employment as waitstaff in restaurants, one stint as an assistant manager). When seasonal employment ends, he files for unemployment and goes on taxpayer-funded vacation. He has no real debt (I gave him my old Nissan truck as a graduation present, and his parents covered college). He says he doesn't have a full-time job yet because he can't figure out what he wants to do in life.  Now, he wants to travel to New Zealand on a "working vacation" visa. It requires 5K in a bank account and I expect he's going to try to beg it out of my parents. He's a Bernie supporter. I want to beat him like he's ANTIFA (hell, he just might be). Am I wrong to feel this much anger at a relative?

Not trolling, just REALLY pissed off. My dad met me for lunch today, and had my nephew in tow. Goddamn millennials!!!!

Yes.

Also, what's he going to do with that truck you gifted him while he's out of the country.  $5K?

Why? I know a bunch Gen Xers that did the same stuff.

One is still a loser (but decent guy) the rest grew up and are now relatively successful.  A couple are whipping my ass income wise now.

Edit whipping not wiping lol

The solution to people like that is to stop helping them.  The unemployment will run out, the new iPhone will be released, and he will get tired of being poor.

Just lacks drive and motivation.  Sometimes I envy people like that.

But I see your point.  While they slide carefree through life they are actively shaping a social and political environment.  This environment's purpose is to take what the hard working, industrious people build so it can be rewarded to the slackers.

You would think so but my 22 year old nephew has been living in a tent behind Wal-Mart for six months. He got fired from his only job 2.5 years ago for cussing out the boss and hasn't done squat since.

What is his degree in?

The smartest guy I know has a doctorate in math and has a low stress teaching job at a small college. Hardly setting the world on fire but he likes the relaxed lifestyle.

Your nephews slacker lifestyle is being enabled by his parents. "I don't know what I want to do yet" means Working is for suckers this is more fun. People don't change without a catalyst and a an all expense paid trip to New Zealand isn't going to be that catalyst.

Is 28 considered a Millennial?

If I were you I would let go of the anger and hatred.

If anything you can accept some blame for his behavior.. a truck is too large of a gift for any occasion and had contributed to his lack of work ethic. You planted the FSA seed, now all you can hope for is that he puts that $5k your parents are going to give him to good use on his New Zealand vacation.

I know alot of young adults doing that same exact thing out here (Vail).  Its  a good life / adventurous etc. if he can manage it on his own dollar.  Sounds like he wants others to pay for his shit though, if so fuck him...  if not, good for him.  NZ sounds like an awesome place to spend a few months.

People like that should stack lumber at a sawmill for a while. It teaches one humility. He will also sleep better at night. When he gets too old to work he will be on welfare. But that's the plan.

A girl I know- smart, athletic, attractive. Got a 4-year degree (I think it was in restaurant and resort management?) and then promptly moved to the mountains, became voluntarily homeless, and works either as a ski-bum or rafting guide. She lived in her car for over a year. She used to post all the time on Facebook about how awesome it was and how everyone is a sucker that works and pays for a mortgage. She married a guy I dislike - he's a "Navy Guy" he told me, got injured in OCS and draws quite a bit a month in disability for a "bad back" and he's also a rafting guide. He frequently posts pictures on Facebook of him carrying his wife around, back must be really bad. He did a stint as a canoe guide in boundary waters as well.  She graduated in 2012 I think.

Their recent project is they bought a small bus which they are converting to their "house".

It sounds like you might be jealous, OP. I am a bit.

One of the few regrets I have in life is not taking a few years to slack off. I went straight through a long education to a grueling job. It would not have set me back a bit to slack off for a while. More likely, it would have helped me.

Being highly educated and multilingual will allow this man to punch his ticket whenever he feels like it. Once he makes some coin of his own, he'll stop being a socialist. Regardless, there are a lot more ways to get through life than working conventional jobs for 40+ years. It's not a character flaw to choose one of them.

As to unemployment, it's largely paid for by employers and is a cost of doing business. If seasonal workers are eligible for it, I got no problem with him claiming it. Lots of people work seasonally.

As for begging $5,000 out of your parents, it's their money. They can spend it how they choose. I wouldn't give it to him, but your parents aren't asking me what to do.

You be you, OP. Let other people be them. This approach is easier than getting worked up about stuff that you have no control over (and don't have any right to try to control, really).

If it makes you feel any better, here's my brother's girlfriend:

29 years old, been in and out of college since she was 18 yet no degrees or technical/vocational training, never had a job for more than a month, addicted to pain killers, and currently trying to get disability to become full FSA.

Why hate? Life catches up to people. Always does. So he's fucking off right now. Big deal.

In 10 years one of two things will happen. Either you'll be getting the last laugh because he's in his late 30's and can't get hired anywhere because he doesn't have any experience, his folks can't help because they're in a retirement home or something, and he's broke.
Or, you'll be pissed because he's figured it out and fell ass backwards into something really good.  It happens.

Life's too short to hate. He's a grown as man let him walk his own path.

A trip to New Zealand is going to be expensive. I did the study abroad (Australia) and travel thing when I was 20 - 21. I ended up paying for it with hard work, but I wish I would of gone into a trade and not wasted my time and got down to work. I'm 32 now, but I think I'm still lumped into the

Millennial group.

28 does sound a little late to be doing that, particularly because someone else is funding it.

Waste, Fraud and Abuse.......but, no real ex-military person would do that.  Rrrrright.

What's his degree in? Something marketable or dead end? Sounds like a case of how useful a SJW degree is... bought the 'be a hippie/progressive deadbeat living off the government teat' shtick. Smart, but chooses to be utterly useless.
