My old buddy was crazy about water. Anytime, anywhere. He was a fish and it was hard to get him out.
I took him out to a beach on Lake Michigan once........I swear he was a mile out. I got quite nervous. Never went back to a body of water where I couldn't get to him. |

View Quote lol - every year before season, I had to work really hard to untrain my wife's spoiling of the dog. It became a running joke. |

It is my goal in life to give any dog I live with the best possible existence I can. The loyalty and lov I receive from dogs is such a bargain, that it doesn't bother me one lick if someone accuses me of spoiling my dog. Quite the contrary, I consider it the highest possible compliment.
But to me, spoiling a dog means good clean, healthy food and water on a regular schedule, mental and physical stimulation, and plenty of love and companionship. My way has worked like a charm for me for several decades, so I won't be changing anytime soon. If you spoil your dog, good on 'ya. |

Next thing you know, OP will be telling us his name is Dez Young, and talking about trips to high dollar hunting camps.
"Never! spoil your bird dog!" |

Took our retriever to the dog park once. The ball was bouncing towards the lake that all the other dogs were loving. The brakes came on fast and she just watched the ball float away.

Every lab I've owned would go out of its way to get wet, even if only meant splashing through a muddy puddle or running through a sprinkler. They were attracted to water the same way I used to be attracted to skinny blondes with bad attitudes and expensive tastes.

I gave up on stopping my wife from spoiling the bird dog |

The only upland dog with more energy than a shorthair. At least it looks like it has plenty of room to run. Good luck View Quote |

<--- She does not like water at all. Took her to the beach the first time, she went about ankle deep and that was it. I took her deeper, and she would head for shore as soon as I let go. I had always had labs growing up, and couldn't keep them out of the water, so I kinda assumed all dogs liked swimming.

My Arfcom dog likes water as long as there are no waves and only chest deep.

Initially that's why I thought. He's tall and lanky, might have some dane in him somewhere. Sounds about right. He'll run all day but when it comes to water it's a no go. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

Our black lab loves water a little too much. She spent 15 minutes swimming after a nutria she saw in a 500 x 200 yard stock tank; I got worried and ended up using a jon boat to pull her out.

My brother acquired a St. Bernard/English Setter cross that happened because the original owners of the St. Bernard lied to the second owners about her being spayed. So, now we have a dog that looks like a Setter, but is built like a St. Bernard, while behaving unlike any upland game dog I've ever been around. Huge interest in birds, loves the water. You would think she was a damn Lab, or something...
Anyone with Setter experience that can speak for their behavior around water? The limited exposure I've had with them led me to expect a dry-land dog that was fussy about getting wet. This dog? Not so much--From indications so far, she's fully amphibious. |

Can't keep my lab mix out of water. Both she and her brother (dec.) would take a splash every chance they got. That means I had to dry them off when I got home (or back to the car).
