Fighting for the things that matter

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/article121673402.html

People buying computers in South Carolina would be limited in their access to porn online under newly proposed legislation.

A bill pre-filed this month by state Rep. Bill Chumley would require sellers to install digital blocking capabilities on computers and other devices that access the internet to prevent the viewing of obscene content.

The proposal also would prohibit access to any online hub that facilities prostitution and would require manufacturers or sellers to block any websites that facilitate trafficking.

Both sellers and buyers could get around the limitation, for a fee. The bill would fine manufacturers that sell a device without the blocking system, but they could opt out by paying $20 per device sold. Buyers could also verify their age and pay $20 to remove the filter.

Chumley’s bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.

I'd guess there won't be many computers bought in S.C. then.

Republicans are their own worst enemies. If I we're an (R) in the house I'd make it a point to condemn his stupid bill publicly and stress that this nut job does not speak for us as a whole.

so many questions here...

what happens if you buy the computer from out of state and its shipped to sc?

you go into your local computer store and buy a microsoft windows new install and install a new os on a new disk.. how to they stop that? are they gonna require ms have special versions of windows for sc?

the are so many flaws in a law like that. the guy hasnt got the sense god gave an animal cracker. not to mention who gets decide what is actually 'porn' on the internet.

guy needs to move to china and go to work for the mind control folks in charge there.

that's why his next step will be to add a PORN exception to the 1st Amendment.

The problem here is that some religious busybody constituent approached him about this, demanding he take action to stop "dem boobies on dem Internetz or I'll work to make sure you never get elected in this district again!" and he lacks the balls to tell them "No."

Doesn't porn get around the prostitution thing by claiming 1st amendment.   SC is now blocking 1A stuff?  Should be fun.

I guessed I missed the part where the article identifies the Chumley guy as a Republican or a democrat. So, where is that in the article?

This! The media gleefully repackages this nonsensical fuckery into 'republicans want to ban porn'. The puritan idiot who proposed this should be called out by leadership and his bill abandoned.

Legislators who propose unconstiutional laws should be censured and fined. Who will sponsor this law in Congress? Will we gun owners stand up for the First Ammendment? Or do we only care about the Second? Next thing you know they'll be quartering troops in our homes in peacetime!

I can remember working in southern NC almost in SC.  The little motel I stayed at along with most of my coworkers was very nice, clean, and run by a very friendly older couple.  My coworker came to me the day I was checking in and complained that anything porn was blocked on the Wi-Fi.  Their Wi-Fi, their rules.  Of course AR15.com was blocked which then sent me into a tizzy.

A bill making the entire state like that seems ridiculous but the chance that it will pass is slim IMO.  That said, what do I know, I'm from Pennsylvania.

Constitutional issues aside, how can they ban an individual's device from accessing certain material?  What is the technology behind it?  He is banning individual device access, not ISP access.

Oh, and I have a pre-ban laptop I could part with for the right price.

We can't have nice things and have dems in power because many Rs can't be remotely consistent on issues of liberty. It also means that such people have disdain for liberty and/or don't get it.

Obscene material has no protection.

The problem is someone has to make a decision about obscenity.

Justice Potter Stewart "I know it when I see it." is a famous decision.

All new PCs will need to have "127.0.0.1 penguinXXX.com" added to the host file. Totally uncrackable. Only highly trained specialists will be able to unblock it.
