I discovered that two of my Colt AR magazines were diminished capacity, 20-round down to 10 or 5 round (don't have any .223 ammo to test them with.)

I took them apart and found that they this removable "U" shaped piece of metal that kept the follower from lowering all the way down by blocking the front and back of the follower.

Anyone have any info on these?

The Colt 5 rd mags were shipped with the old Sporter rifles and carbines.  The hole in the bottom of the U-block aligned with the hole in the floor plate and was riveted in place.  They were useful to meet hunting regulations.

AWB years, I had a couple, they were blocked at 10 rounds.  I assumed that's how colt was complying with mag ban.

I bought a new blue label sporter in '90 that had those riveted in (for a short time).

so you have a club, and you're worried about a small piece of it?

You know it's bad if generalkaos comes out of hiding.

They came out in the late 80's when Colt introduced the "Sporter" series for us filthy civilians.
There is (or was) a small demand for the inserts in states with a 5rd hunting limit.

They existed long before the ban.

My 1979 SP1 came with two 20 round mags blocked to five rounds with the U shaped spacer. No rivets in the floor plates though. Those are ban era mags.

I bought a Govt. Carbine back in '93 before the AWB and it came with two 20 rounders that had the U shaped piece riveted in place to limit them to 5 rounds.  I drilled out rivet and promptly removed them from both of the mags.

Colt sold some like that prior to the '94 ban, when they were selling the neutered AR's (large trigger pin, double-headed screw front pivot pin, no bayonet lug, etc).  I've got one somewhere that I removed the insert from that was with a preban rifle.
