I live in Oregon and my buddy has a corner of his property growing bamboo. It grows there wild, and is very nice bamboo.
He's got probably 3 or 4 hundred stocks of the stuff. Thickest ones are 3 or 4 inches wide. We're trying to figure out wtf to do with it. Neither of us know of any place to sell it, or what to make out of it. Hell, we'ved been hauling a BUNCH we've cut down to the dump the past several months. No place to keep it. Any ideas? |

Burn it. Bamboo is evil. I hate it.
That shit just grows and grows, There is NOTHING you can do to get rid of it that doesn't involve hunting down and killing every last root and shoot. Even then, it still comes back. It's the devil incarnate of the plant world. Forget about having a garden, a lawn, or anything without bamboo propagating everywhere. Did I say I hate bamboo? |

I can't believe I'm the first to suggets watching Gilligan's Island reruns as a source for ideas.
You could build a: house furniture car boat (no wait-they never got that one to work) |

Check out to see if there is anyone in the are who builds recurves and longbows. It is used in archery to make bows and is getting real popular now. If you can find a copy of Traditional Bowhunter magazine there will be a bunch of ads. Contact any of them.
I will take a small percentage for brokering. LOL |

Of course, I would have no knowledge of this from my college days because I avoided all such things and never hooked up with any of the cute, natural, little hippy girls... No Siree! This IS NOT one of the girls I was referring to but it was the best pic I could find! [:D] |

Make implements of discipline out of it, and sell it to disgruntled catholic school teachers and parents [;D]

If you are serious about making things out of the stuff, I would suggest that you watch Gilligans Island, as it is chalked full if great projects for the aspiring bamboo manufacturer wannabe. I would start with something simple like a hut, & once you get some experience you could try a boat, or a bike, or if you really get brave you could make a taxi. Any way have fun with it![:D]

I'm sittin here looking at a nice picture frame my wife brought home. It's made from slices of bamboo and might be a good swap meet product. Course the one I'm lookin at was likely made in China.
Maybe door and window moldings for the polynesian theme. Or chair rails, towel bars etc. |

How about bikes? In NYC I saw a very interesting bike made of bamboo. It was a normal bike covered with bamboo lenghts over the entire frame, handlebars etc, then wrapped everywhere else. It was nicely done, and you would only see a small amount of metal, mostly the running gear and rims. It looked like a real bamboo bike. They would sell these for around $3K each at the time. I had the chance to take a good look at one but found the actual bike underneath to be very low quality for the asking price. I heard that someone has actually built a complete bike frame including wheels out of bamboo with only the cranks being metal but never saw one like that.
