Sorry I don't need a spokesman for me. I've always been able to hold my own. I just find some of you guys issues amusing. I for one am not anti gun, and I own my own black rifle. I have always liked shooting and blowing things up. Yes the Army trained me well. I have found alot of good info on this site. I guess I would be considered a lurker since I don't post very often. I do check it out everyday though.

Since this is a male-dominated board it's inevitable that (moderators permitting) discussions of issues with females will come up often.  All of us have had problems with women from time to time.  I like women a lot, but as Dr. Laura once said to a female caller "You have to admire men, because they have to put up with US."

There have recently been threads started by men like Zaphod and Eric the Hun who are having major problems in their relationships.  They are men seeking advice and comfort primarily from men, and the comments from women are welcome there as well.

Each gender presents challenges and problems for the other.  Go to any female-dominated board and you will find misandry if you look for it.  Most of the apparent disrespect for women here is light-hearted kidding similar to what naturally occurs when men meet in small groups in person.  Sometimes people forget that the forum is open to all, and let their manners slip.

We all need to take ourselves and each other less seriously.  A thick skin is always necessary in discussions where you can't see the other person's face.

Furthermore, IBTL.

I have to say I found the chat room to be so bogged down by racial slurs and personal attacks the one time I visited that normal conversation wasn't possible. I haven't been back. I don't know if it's like that all the time, but I was literally attacked from the minute I said hello, because of the way I said hello. I made the mistake of saying Aloha!

I am an AR15 junky though and love the rest of the site. Good people here.

While I have not always agreed with the moderators or staff, I have always been treated respectfully by them (with the notable exception of one recently departed moderator and one female moderator). I have spoke with several staff members and moderators on the phone and found them to be very helpful. I would find it difficult to believe any moderator on this forum would do as was suggested.

Because this is a man dominated board, with members ages, experiences and education varying a large degree, one expects there to be a considerable amount of the good ole boys club mentality, which can result in seemingly off-color humor and many remarks that otherwise would be inappropriate. Put into the context of the board, and understanding this is a discussion board with some resultant anonymity, members sometimes free to say things they otherwise would not.

Unless one takes personally the comments on a board such as this, there is no reason to feel offended. If at any point the offenses outweigh the benefits, then the best recourse would be to hit the little X in the right hand corner of your screen and close down AR15.com.

We all control our own online experiences to a great degree. There is little room to place blame on others for  "bad" experiences on here.

I won't leave this board because of seemingly rude or off-color remarks. I might leave if I no longer enjoy or benefit from the forum.

So far, it's been overwhelmingly educational and enjoyable. However, I have spent my life in male dominated areas and perhaps am less susceptible.

As the saying goes, "If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen."  Yes, I think some of the topics about women are not the greatest, but I have this AMAZING ability to choose NOT to read or respond to them!!  Cool, huh?

It's too bad that Karebear's feelings got hurt, but she had to have known that this is a male-dominated environment and therefore, it is not always a pro-female place.  That's life.  I don't come to this board to make me feel "special."  I learn lots, get pissed occassionally and laugh often because of it.  However, I am adult enough to know that the opinions and thoughts of others in large groups are not always what I want to hear.

Yes, I am confident, armed, and see myself as no one's victim. Anywhere.

I see many tales of woe from men around here, ranting, railing, and venting about their problems with women.
Most of the time, they are in the middle of a terrible life change, and it is merely blowing off steam. Understandable. I offer my condolences to them. It must be awful.

The threads that are offensive are the ones that specifically single women out as being incompetent, weak, stupid, or good for nothing except as a warm body to use for a night.
Those are indeed degrading, as would be the case if women wrote the same about men.

I see incompetent, weak, and stupid men around here all the time.

It would be nice if we could all respect each other.

I just come here to hang out with folks who share some common interests, such as shooting, liberty, and the pursuit of terrorists.  I don't come here to look for women (I have a wonderful wife at home!).  There are some things that are said that are offensive to my personal value system, but after a couple decades in the military I've learned to FIDO (Forget It & Drive On).

May have been the most logical post made on the subject, besides hanna's.

I know Kara from when she first came here and I still talk to her every now and then on IM. From what I know of her she seems cool to me and honestly interested in firearms. I have no problems with her whatsoever. In fact, I like her and wish she would come back here to post in the future.

The problems all started when some folks here thought she was a guy just pulling some sort of prank and trying to get the guys going. Lots of people said out of the way stuff to her thinking she was a man and I can see why she was offended. I even wondered myself at first but have since found out she is what she says she is. But it was just misunderstanding in large that led to the problems that developed. I regret it went down that way.

I can recall a day when I was a fresh faced newbie here trying to find my way too. I found this place sometimes offending and intimidating as well, because here people are direct. There is no watered down content! LOL. But I decided to stick it out and later became comfortable with everyone here. I understand where many folks are coming from and in many cases, as I have listened to certain folks, I have found my opinions changed in many cases. A discussion with someone as gifted in debate as EricTheHun for example, can be intimidating, especially for a newbie. But if you listen to what he is actually saying, you will usually have to agree with the guy. I have learned not to take offense to constructive criticism and it has helped me. Again, ARF.com is not watered down and people say exactly what they feel...which is actually unique and refreshing in this day and age of PC'ness. But that can be new to folks who are accustomed to being on a forum like this and take some getting used to.

But again, for a woman new to shooting and new to this forum, I can see where they could be offended. But for them I would offer the same advice as with new guys....take the time to learn the place, feel it out, don't stick your head out (it will most certainly get chopped off) and basically, tough it out until the body of members recognize you are actually serious in your intentions. We do get so many trolls that come and go, that it does take a while to build and earn the respect and trust of fellow members. But those new to here don't understand that sometimes. So I can understand both sides of the issue.

I have no problems with women on these forums. Tatjana, who can often be found in the ammo forum probably knows more about ammo and guns than 95% of the people here, including me. She doesn't ask for special treatment, she just came here and made her own way. I respect the hell outta her. She is a pro. TitaniumT, who has had a troubled start is also ok in my book. Her controversial thread that went to 20 some pages was one of the best info threads I have ever seen regarding AR carbines. While much of the male responses to that thread may have been "flirting" in disguise, some good info was presented. There was no problems until a few opinionated guys started posting info she hadn't requested. So the info sought was good and I cannot blame her for that thread going downhill. It was not her fault.

So as you can see, many women are just as serious and passionate about guns and the RKBA as us. They are obviously fewer in number, maybe in part because they find it harder to be accepted by us guys here in the world of shooting. So let's remember this in the future. Whether it's Kara, TitatiumT or whoever, let's give them a chance to contribute and be a part of this great place called ARF.com. I am not asking anyone to cut them any slack just because they are women. But let's at least give them an equal playing field as the guys. Afterall, if we get the chance to gain more women in the shooting sports, imagine what that would do toward protection of the RKBA. Think about that for a moment. But when a woman shows up here let's not treat her like she is just here for a sexual experience...or even worse.....act as if we are being invaded my mongrel hordes! Give em a chance. If they are dedicated it will soon show. And if they aren't that will show too. Then they can be judged accordingly. But as Dennis Miller would say, "that's just my opinion, I could be wrong".
