Think about a Pocket PC. My wife wanted a MP3 player for her birthday but didn't want me to spend $400 on a 20gig hard drive. I got her the Dell Axim and a 256MB CF card. The Axim is on sale for $200 or less on Dell's site and I got the 256MB card for $50. It supports MP3 and WMA. You can also get other "Media Player" programs dor it that support more options. It is slightly larger than the mini-mp3 players out there, but you can also use it for morte than just music. In addition to the CF clot it also has a SD/MMC slot.

just get the iPod. You won't regret it.

I do like the Axim, however I want something that's more pocket-size and with a longer battery life.
The smaller MP3 players last for 10 hours or more on a singe AAA cell. |

I got the Archos Jukebox - twice the size, half the cost of the iPod.
Records analog inputs using RCA jacks - you can connect the thing up to anything with analog outputs and record directly into MP3 (it has it's own built-in MPG encoder). Of course you can use the USB2 jack to sling anything into and out of it at 480 Mb a second. It has a built-in microphone that you can use to record lectures. Headphone and RCA output jacks allow you to connect it to a fullsize stereo or like I do use an iRock to broadcast into my car radio. 20 Gig is big enough that I use it to store DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 OS disks and still have room for MPEG1 movies, several thousand photographs, and a couple hundred personal files. I have about 400 of my favorite songs on the thing too [:)] Runs for about 10 hours off of four "AA" batteries. Has digital SPIF/DIF (sp) ports too. I bought mine over a year ago so I know their cheaper/bigger/faster than before. My 20 Gb ran $260 IIRC. I know Apple has finally come out with a Windows version for the other 95% and has dropped about $100 off of their markup. |
