Zainab Mustaffa, 2, looks at an M-16 and AK-47 assault rifles which are owned by her father Mustaffa prior to being turned over for licensing as they take advantage of a weapons amnesty being launched Sunday June 1, 2003 in Baghdad. U.S. and British troops launched the campaign Sunday in an effort to get Iraqis to hand over their high-powered weapons which have flooded the streets since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime. We all know that's NOT an M-16.  But it does have M-16 roots.  Odd thing to see in Iraq though.

I have a friend who went back to Nam for a reunion with some of his buddies,he was at a local bar and they were talking to a retired NVA reg officer and he took them to a warehouse and what was there made all thier mouths drop open, crates and crasted stacked to the cieling filled with M-16's and M-16 parts.
There were crates filled with so much USGI stuff that they were awe struck, remember we left in a hurry and left a lot behind.

Now add that to the fact that most of europe and asia use AK's and thats why all that stuff was sitting around ,I wonder if we could import those preban mags, there was shit loads of 20's and 30's he said.
The stuff dreams are made of huh?

I don't think that rifle is derived from an M-16. Looks more to have an AR-180 or Kalashnikov "piston" gas system. The magazine release (I presume) forward of the trigger guard look AK-ish, but in the wrong place. I don't know what it is, but I think I want one, now. Thanks, man. Just what I need - another rifle on the "to buy" list.

Its a Beretta AR70.  Uses design features from both the AK and the M16.

I think the pistol is the ever-present Eqyptian Helwan "Brigadier" Beretta copy.

Ah, AR70. Never seen one in real life. I'd agree wit thumbhole that pistol is probably a Helwan. The Port Authority Police in ALexandria, Egypt carry these things. You can actually hear the slide clankning aganst the frame on the rare occasion that they get up off their fat asses and walk around. They are not issued ammunition, because they sell it for the brass.

I agree with Lumpy.  It looks like an AR70.  A friend of mine used to have one.  Watch-Six

After they are registered and confiscated how's he going to protect the kid?

I just hope they give the guns back after everything is sorted out.

If '04 turns out right maybe I'll own an AR70 someday [:)]

Watch-Six: it IS an AR70

Flash-hider:  If the ban sunsets in '04 it will have no effect on your ability to get foreign made models that were banned from import under Bush Sr.'s 1989 executive order.  UNLESS they set up factories in the US to produce them.
