I am already a member of GOA but I am seriously considering joining the NRA. I refused to in the past because they didn't give a damn about my rights to have AK's and AR's.

But before I do this, I need to know EXACTLY where the NRA stands on the AWB.  I know that LaPierre has come out publicly against it but is the NRA really going to make this a priority?  Will they fight to the death to make sure the AWB sunsets?

I am afraid that the answer to the last question is no.  LaPierre's statements got me thinking that maybe the NRA will be able to ensure it sunsets, but if they are going to do it half-assed, I won't join.

I'd like to join and have wanted to for a long time but didn't because of compromise.  However, if they will draw a line in the sand and say we won't stand for the AWB, I'd be willing to fork over some cash.

Please help me decide!  Will the NRA REALLY help the AWB sunset?

I joined specifically because of the 1994 assault weapons ban. I wrote on the check "I am joining for 1 year only, if the 1994 assault weapons ban expires due to NRA intervention, I will get a lifetime membership". Definitely join, its only 35.00, and let them know in no uncertain terms why you are joining.

The AWB is NRA's top legislative priority right now. LaPierre has been on every major network (including the now famous ass-reaming he handed out on CNN last friday) stomping against the AWB.
LaPierre has grown some testicles lately. So much so that the more "moderate" people are worried about his hard stance. I think that alone is worth the dues.

Every paying member is one more the NRA can claim over the MMM and other gun haters.  They also send you handy post cards to mail to your elected representitives.  Or Oprah!
Sure they bug you for money, but no more than my credit card company does.

It looks like NRA has jumped into it with both feet..If you can find one of the ads that says $25 join that way if you are low on bucks..but JOIN! It gives the NRA the numbers and the numbers is what scares the pols.

The NRA is the Major oganization that fights for the 2nd admendment. Just listen to the news and how all the commies cry about the NRA gets in the way of all the gun grabbers.

It's only $35.00 a year and it is worth it regardless of what happens with the AWB. If any one you don't value your gun rights enough to pay $35.00 a year just keep it in your pocket and know that you are helping the liberals steal your Freedoms, LOSER.

... If you value your Second Amendment rights I would say $25/year is a small token for even a symbolic voice.

It has to be a good move to join an organization so many leftists hate. They would support NAMBLA before the NRA.

I just clicked the nrawol.com site, and I have to agree with them.

I was once a Life member.  I resigned several years ago.

NRA isn't part of the solution, they're part of the problem.

Their new president said he needed to sign up more of the nation's 15 million hunters. Never mentioned guys like us.

I second Jefferson Adams post.  I won't give another dime to the NRA.  Life member of JPFO now.

For every gun owner that I talk to who is a member of the NRA, there are two who have something bad to say about it.

If all of you would come off that $35/year, the NRA would have well over 10 million members and then they wouldn't have to compromise.

They don't "have" to compromise now.

My NRA membership expires 1/2004

I called them Friday, and told them I will become a Distinguished Life member IF they keep the AW ban away! (I'll renew for 1 year in december...)

I also told them I would donate funds SPECIFICALLY EARMARKED to STOP the renewal of ANY AW ban!

In his President's Column in American Rifleman he mentioned others besides hunters.  But what exactly do you call us?  Black rifle owners?

His main focus was on hunters because they face not only firearm restrictions but hunting/land use restrictions as well.  There is also more of them than us.  His goal is to get 5 million NRA members.

Even though the NRA may not be what we all desire, it's the best thing going at the moment.

If we don't join and then speak our piece and vote, we have no right to sit back and bitch.

We may not get what we want, either specifically or generally, but the more there are of us, the more the boat rocks.

Its only 35.00 guys. If your not a member and you are a gun owner, that means someone else is pulling your weight. Now more than ever they need more members, this assault weapons ban is thier top priority.

Bullshit!! No one is pulling my weight!! I refuse to join an organization that is anti-second Amendment. NObody can "compromise" away MY God-given rights......
Put your $$ into "NO COMPROMISE" organizations rarher than those who sell out a bit at a time... Where do you get the idea it's a priority for nra?? Fact is, they will wind up trading the AWB, for no lawsuits against manufacturers.....
Soon, the weapons best suited for militia use will be banned. You'll be able to thank nra and the repubs, next time you send 'em a check..[rolleyes]

Well Hell....most of them DO support NAMBLA.
And are probably practicing members.

I have been a Life Member of the NRA since 1972, and while I don't always agree with their policies or priorities, they are the best game in town. Because of their past lobbying efforts, they have a lot of clout in Washington. Maybe not as much as we'd like, or as much as the antis would have the public believe, but still more than any other RKBA group. Numbers impress the pols, and the NRA has the numbers.

As to whether they will go to the wall over the AWB, who knows??? If it was trap & skeet, or duck or deer hunting, or grandpa's old .22 rifle I would say yes. But in the past they have always seemed lukewarm on the "evil black rifles." I think they will fight for the sunset, but whether they will risk losing their aura of invincibility over the AWB remains to be seen. They should make it plain to the Republicans in Congress that their continued political survival depends on how they PUBLICALLY take a stand on the AWB. The best way to avoid having Bush cave in to the anti-gunners is to never let it get to his desk for signing.

But by all means, join. Even if it's only for one year, this is the year.

This is something that you should not have to think about. If you own a firearm, any type of firearm, or thinking about getting one, you should join the NRA. I became a Life Member in 1985 and it was the best thing I have ever done. They are a very powerful organization and the anti-gun liberals know this.

If every member could recruit just one person to join, the anti-gun liberals would stop trying to take away our gun rights for fear of being voted out of office.

Just join!!!

At this point in our fight to regain our freedoms, every serious gun owner should be a member of the NRA, GOA and every other legitimate gun-rights organization.  Put aside the political in-fighting and squabbling, there is strength in numbers - and the socialists know it.

Frankly, I'm disappointed that the average gun owner and many active shooters know so little about the assualt on our rights.
