Looking on Amazon and not a one seems to stand out without some negative (shitty wheels, hose falls out, no carry handle, etc.).  Any recommendations?

The Ridgid $100 model is likely the ideal shop vac for your average person.  It's relatively quiet too.

I'll update with a link in a moment.

I've got a rigid and have no complaints.

I've had a Rigid for 15 years or so that's been a workhorse. Of course, the hose falls out and the wheels kind of suck.

God damn, first post nails it like always.

The Ridgid I have is awesome, much better than my old "Shop Vac" brand

Our Rigid lasted 10 years before finally crapping out. Just got a Vacmaster a few months ago and so far I like it just fine.

I bought one of these a couple months ago, the thing is a beast. Best money I ever spent on a shop vac.

I have a Fein turbo I for general shop vac usage.

Quiet, powerful, and has the neat power tool socket.

Damnit, cheaper at home depot than Amazon.  I'll have to leave the basement.
