I've never been to New Zealand but I've known several people from there and they are the nicest people I've ever met.

It's the most beautiful place I've ever seen, and you probably won't want to leave.

It's in the southern hemisphere and on the other side of the planet, so everything is upside down there.
Just be ready for that. |

You should watch the documentary films "Flight of the Concords" to gain an understanding of the New Zealand culture and peoples
|

I'd be trying like hell to get in here and talk to a bunch of the artisans.
No idea where they are exactly, but I'd find out. http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/ Probably a crapload of outdoor adventure stuff to do there too. |

Enjoy! I had a great month there many years back. I would love to do it again.
For best results, only spend a few days in Auckland. Go travel the island. |

Nope, well, perhaps if they were built that way. Drink the water, breathe the air, eat the food. Even American franchise restraunts have better food there than in this country. Try to see the west coast of the South Island if you can. The scenery is heart stopping. Accents can be a little hard to understand. Spent the first ten years of my life there. I gotta go back. |

The people were so dang nice........it was almost suspicious. Really nice, polite, kind folks. We had a great time

My brother went there for work once, he had a TV ad shoot for Subaru in the summer and I guess they have snow there during "our" summer, anyway he said you drive down a rural road and residents run out to talk to you, cause they are bored and rarely see a new face.
eta: lotsa sheep |

The liability laws are very limited, therefore, there are many cool "extreme" activities available. Bungy, caving, zip lines, canyoning, jet boats, etc. Lots of fun stuff.
You are going to have a great time. |

I spent about 2 weeks on the south island in Christchurch. If you go to Christchurch, PM me and I can tell you where to stay. I could live there easily. Nicest people on earth but they didn't appear to care for the Australians much. Spent a day at Akaroa harbor, bought some jade, drank some good beer and had a great time. Also went down to Timaru.
Many areas I passed through really do look like the pics in National Geographic, it is beautiful. The "All Blacks" rugby team is like religion, get the T shirt or jacket. When they play, everyone is glued to the TV and radio. I have nothing negative to say about it at all. |
|
Thanks all, will update when I land, still don't have flight or hotel info, I should know on Monday where I'm going to be... They usually get us pretty nice places to stay...

Prettiest place they have ever been to with the nicest people. |

If you're into rabbit genocide, every easter in Otago they have a search and destroy competition. Last year, the teams wacked 8500 bunnies in a 24 hour period

This is the same place, with a similar view in summer. [I know it is summer because there is no snow ] |

Is currently daylight until circa 2100hrs here, and you should pack specific to where you're going, the north and south island are very different weather wise.
If you're stuck in Auckland, you're not seeing New Zealand at all... |
|
Mind your head when visiting the shire. Hobbit ceilings are low.
|

My brother is heading out over there as well. In for updates.
ETA: Women folks? |

Out door adventure capital of the world. No shit. There for one week (south island) went skiing, bungee jumping, glacier hiking, paragliding, jet boating, snowcapped riding at the antarctic center, and getting trashed at a bar while watching the All Blacks beat he Springboksi n the last minute in one of the most amazing sports games Iv ever seen, all in a 5 day period. Even their gun laws aren't horrible (considering theit British influences). I would move there tomorrow if I could get a job. Amazing country with some of the friendliest people of earth. Just don't funk with the maories. Seriously.

Just got back from a short vacation. Most of the sites to see are fairly spread out so plan on a couple days if you plan on doing any site seeing. The geothermal springs and mud pits are pretty cool to look at.
Aukland is pretty easy to get around, but the traffic is horrible (the city is now twice the population is was designed for), so plan your hotel where you can walk. As mentioned earlier, the people there are all super nice, and I never had a problem getting directions to places. Business class flight lets you lay down, so the flight over and back wasn't bad, and I will NEVER fly jet star again (used them from Aukland to Sydney). |
