#1 Lawrence of Arabia
#1 Blackhawk Down #2 Bridge Over the River Kwai #3 Patton #4 Bridges At Toko Ri #5 Twelve O'Clock High #6 Gallipoli #7 The Last Emporer #8 Michael Collins #9 Sand Pebbles If you haven't seen these movies in a while, or are younger and have never seen these films before, go out and get them on DVD. You will not be dissapointed! QUALITY movies with a little more than you get nowadays... |
Oh come on now where is the movie Battleground. It should be it the top 5.

Feh.....
you missed alot of good ones. I'm going to have to disagree. |
Hmmmmm......
Somebody hasn't been to the movies for about 25 years. |
nah, We Were Soldiers and Saving Private Ryan ahs to be on there
WHAT????
Half those movies suck. IMHO.... No SPR or BHD? Bridge Over the River Kwai isn't even a "war" movie. It's a drama about human nature that just happens to take place during a war. Hardly any war action at all. I disagree with about 80% of the list. |
Additions:
Blackhawk Down Big Red One I agree with the others on you list, except Dr Zivago. Haven't seen the movie, but read the book. Not a WAR MOVIE. Love story. |
Silly oversight; list corrected at great cost and effort.
No, I am on target here... "Fight Club" ?!? You guys have got to take a closer look at the sh*t they are shovelling out nowadays...really WATCH those "old" movies again and you will see what I mean... You will realize what "dumbing down" and "lowest common denominator/corporate marketing" are all about... |
A few more off the top of my head:
Gettysburgh They Were Expendable Sands of Iwo Jima A Bridge To Far The Longest Day Pork Chop Hill Glory The Big Red One IMO The Last Emperor and Michael Collins do not belong on that list both are great movies but not among the 10 best war movies. And IMO Battleground has to be on the list. |
Saving Private Ryan
The Great Escape Tora Tora Tora 12 O'Clock High GunLvr |
Gotta put in my vote for Kellys Heroes making the top 10.
Is Battleground the old B&W movie about the 101st at Bastogne? Ends with them marching out singing cadence, between columns of fresh GIs marching in. |
Gentlemen, I guess I'll have to be the first to say it. #1=[size=6]Stripes[/size=6] [rofl2]
Edited b/c I can't proofread for shit. |
1. Cross of Iron
2. Blackhawk Down 3. Saving Private Ryan 4. Glory 5. Four Feathers (30's version) 6. Memphis Belle 7. Gunga Din (it's kind of a war movie) 8. Bridge over the River Kwai 9. Rio Grande (do Indian Wars count?) 10. Starship Troopers (do war against giant alien bugs count?) |
Well, I'm young and haven't seen alot of the old movies so my list is probably a little bit ingnorant.
1)We Were Soldiers 2)Blackhawk Down 3)Saving Private Ryan 4)Hamburger Hill 5) Full Metal Jacket 6)The Beast 1-3 are really tied for first and the last 3 aren't great but I are entertainment. |
1. Twelve O'Clock High
2. We Were Soldiers 3. Sands of Iwo Jima 4. The Big Red One 5. Blackhawk Down 6. Battleground 7. All Quiet on the Western Front (Lew Ayres) 8. Patton 9. The Sand Pebbles 10. Wake Island |

Patton
Tora Tora Tora Saving Pvt Ryan The Green Berets The Great Escape Sand Pebbles Alvin York FailSafe Red Badge of Courage Hamburger Hill/Full Metal Jacket (tie) Honorable Mention: No Time for Sargents, Mr. Limpett, Dr. StrangeLove |

Quoted: Quoted: #1 Lawrence of Arabia View Quote [singing]Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia, he was an English guy, who came to fight the Turkish[/singing] View Quote You know, I saw a thread on lawrence of arabia a couple of days ago and had an urge to do what you just did, but I was a afraid no one would get it. |
The Green Berets View Quote I once read a thread at DUh about the move The Green Berets. It was one of the first times I had looked around the site, and it really left an impression on me as to how out of touch and hateful those idiots are. Comments like "John Wayne looked like a sissy in the movie," "the biggie plain(sic) with guns wasn't real," "it was just pure war propaganda," "it makes white america want to kill chinks," etc. was really disheartening. My pick for best sleep aid disguised as a war movie, The Thin Red Line.z |
I've noticed a couple of "not listeds"
Stalag 13 Patriot Von Ryan's Express Bridge over the river Kwai (sp) Sand pebbles was mentioned... but no where near enough. edited for spelling |
I agree with all of the above but two left out are Pork Chop Hill and The Hunters. Both set in Korea. There where a few good movies made in the fifties about Korea. Although not a war movie the Manchurian(sp) Canidate is pretty good watching Frankie Boy did a good job. and the take down Arisaka is pretty cool too.[8D]
What about Red Dawn?
Not the greatest movie but, how many other pro-gun movies are there? "Go to the sporting goods stores and get the forms 4-4-7-3. These will show who owns guns." |
I realize that I may be dating myself a bit, but here goes:
1. 12 O'Clock High 2. Saving Private Ryan 3. Band of Brothers 4. We Were Soldiers 5. Sgt. York 6. Run Silent, Run Deep 7. Mr. Roberts 8. Stalag 17 9. The Great Escape 10. Das Boot Man, this was tough, so many great ones left out. Maybe a thread should be started for the 5 WORST war movies ever made! |

Quoted: Quoted: #1 Lawrence of Arabia View Quote [singing]Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia, he was an English guy, who came to fight the Turkish[/singing] View Quote beep beep! [:)] Empire Of The Sun was pretty good but not sure if I'd count it as a "war" movie. If Bridge Over River Kwai does then Empire should also. No mention of 1941? [;D] |
"Tora, Tora, Tora" is one of my favorites. Has just about every great actor of that period in it. Every high school senior should be forced to watch this movie, it explains very well why we had to kick some Japanese ass. And why we always have to be wary of them in the future.

Nobody has listed "The Boys in Company C" yet?
Okay, maybe it's not in the top ten with all the others mentioned here, but still a good flick. |
Wow. Nobody mentioned Pearl Harbor(with Benny"puke"Affleck). Did you all hate it that much?
Full Metal Jacket Saving Private Ryan We Were Soldiers Black Hawk Down Patton M*A*S*H* Platoon I don't think I've seen about half of the movies mentioned here. Guess I've got some renting to do. [b]Zoom[/b] You ain't kiddin'-TRL was definitely a sleeping pill. |
How about The Wild Geese? Not the best but should be in the top ten.
John Wayne, Randolf Scott, and the like, they don't make movies like they did when those guys were around.
