I'll finish out this year due to it being Gordon's last year then that's it as far as catching nearly every race. Daytona for the wrecks and that's going to be about it.

Since Stewart drives a potato car now I can't really see anyone else that's worth watching.

No.

NASCAR is a massive money-making machine with massive corporate sponsorships... Including US Military sponsorships...

NASCAR can lose a few loyal fans over this for the sake of maintaining their business model: massive corporate sponsorships.

Think Tide (laundry detergent), or Mars (candy) want their name associated with an organization that allows the Confederate Flag to fly?

NASCAR can lose a few loyal fans.

They cannot risk losing a few sponsors. They cannot risk it... They cannot risk their business model...

NASCAR has instructed the networks covering races for a number of years to not show th emepty sections of grand stands even at the bigger races. The money they get is nothing from fans. The track owner makes some money and it's been on the decline. Their cash cow is TV.

Notice now when they show a race there's no more sweeping shots of how full/or not full the stands are, there's a reason for that.

The best part of that is you know Cale wouldn't put up with any of it. The drivers and teams themselves have hit into too much money to cause waves about anything. Look at how many drivers who are "arch" enemies get rides from their "arch" enemy in their private plane after the race.

Back in the day (Yeah I'm old) it was a lot more contentious and a lot mor entertaining and a guy was fighting to not have to go back to work at the feed mill.

As long ago as 20 years, you were supposed to take down flags in the infield during the race. The claim was it interferes with the TV camera's view.

View Quote

A smart person would paint a giant rebel flag across the entire roof of his RV, or drape a large one across the back or sides.

It's not interfering, and not all tracks have tunnels under the track to remove people in the infield who would rather fight than take down the flag? What are they going to do? Stop the race to make the flag owners leave?

there used to be a looooong waiting list for tickets to the races, now they sell tickets at the fucking gate and you don't even have to sit next to anybody

they've lost their way, I hope to hell they fold and get replaced with an organization that cares about racing

That is a two way street. NASCAR became attractive to corporate sponsors because it drew such large crowds and TV ratings. Both have been in a steady decline now for a number of years. The more fans who abandon NASCAR, the less the incentive for corporate sponsors to remain involved. When it comes to a spectator sport like NASCAR, everything begins and ends with the fans. NASCAR has lost a huge portion of what has always been its most loyal fans. Stunts such as this (banning rebel flags) will only further alienate their fan base. That will mean fewer asses in the stands and less TV interest.

NASCAR's "business model" for the past 15 years has largely involved neglecting the region and the core fan base who made NASCAR into what it became in the 1990s in an attempt to draw in fans from the west coast, the northeast, etc. Yet those fans only stuck around a few years, then became tired of it and moved on to other things. And NASCAR has pissed off its core fans by trying to cater to this new crowd that they have lost many of those fans too. NASCAR's business model sucks ass. That is evident by declining attendance and TV ratings. And it is only going to get worse. NASCAR was at its best when it was still largely a southern thing, back before it tried to become everything to everybody.
