Beautiful pics. I can always pick out a radial engine going overhead, it's unfortunately a sound you don't hear too often any more.

Radials are awesome, except for all the oil they puke on to the underside of the plane. I spent a lot of time cleaning the bottom of a Yak52

Here is my contribution. Two of the most beautiful aircraft ever made.

ETA, I have no pics of radials to contribute OP, just figured I'd share that video.

Yes. A very distinct sound. I'll bet that three cylinder sounds weird though.

And to not love the sound of a radial engine is just unAmerican.

Round engine is best engine.

Love the sound of radial engines.

I grew up in crop duster country and back in the day they all had radials.

I could hear them most days at some point during the summer.

In college I worked for a guy that was a Stearman rebuilder.

Got some good Stearman rides and even some stick time on occasion (no solo though).

I used to hear a DC3 fly over every now and then. I would always stop and listen to them.

Yeah, here is a picture you will never see anywhere else.

I'm flying the Stearman PT17 in the lead and my buddy is flying what was then the only YPT-15 (Saint Louis Street Car) before he sold it and it was subsequently wrecked.

My buddy owned both of these airplanes when this picture was taken.

A Merlin sounds kinda sexy and elegant, I'll give you that.

But a R-2800 Double Wasp sounds like it's going to drag you into an alley, beat you to death with your own spinal cord, and then use your corpse to put on a Punch and Judy show for your widow. The sound downright nasty, and thus are awesome.

Yup, sit on top of the engine, a drive shaft  between the seats, and a transmission behind your head. My dad blames his hearing loss on the one he flew.

I fly an R1340 most every day.   Logged over 40hrs on it this week.

Helluva good engine for what it is, but junk by today's standards.  P&W has not even supported the radials in 50-odd years.

I have a counterweight prop too.  Another PITA in itself.

Between the engine and the prop, I can see good for about 5 minutes.   I clean the windscreen up to 30-40 times a day!

Nice pics.......   .        looking at these planes   I thought if someone knew Bill Geissele  . ask him to come up with a cleaner trigger to fire threw the prop. be all serous like.  money no object.    we have a test engine stand and spare props you can engineer a fire control.  you can have all the  50 cal you want .

My ol' man flew DC-6s and DC-7s for Delta, the -7s, like the Super Connies, had Wright turbo compounds. Famous for overheating and eating oil.

B-36 slogan:  "two turning, two burning, two smoking, two choking, and two more unaccounted for."

...problem was exacerbated by the propellers' pusher configuration, which increased carburetor icing. The design of the R-4360 engine tacitly assumed that it would be mounted in the conventional tractor configuration—propeller/air intake/28 cylinders/carburetor—with air flowing in that order. In this configuration...
