I love Laphroaig, especially Cask Strength. Should be drank neat, and sipped, savored, imo. But you will find most people can't handle it. |

I love the way it smells, but I just can't understand how people drink it. I'd like to appreciate it, but I just can't. Hell, I don't even like rauchbier or smoked cheeses. I do like Macallan, Glenomrangie and Balvenie, but the smokey ones . . . eh, I just can't. Are there any scotches lighter on the smoke than Laphroaig? Introductory smokey dranks.

Too much peat, on a 1-10 scale it is way over 9.
I prefer Speysides, much more accessible to my palate. |

Glenlivet 12 imo is a great budget single malt, hell, it's a decent scotch for any price. I find Glenlivet isn't Smokey, and even almost sweet. You should be able to pick up a bottle for around $35-$40. |

That's what I love about the single malts. Each has it's own flavor according the region it's made in. |

Single malt is refined and Old World, Bourbon is more of an American flavor, brash and unpretentious. |

Love Laphroaig? Find some Ardbeg 10, if you can. Same price range, slightly different profile. Also if you can find it, snag a bottle of Ardbeg Corryvreckan - it makes the other two taste a bit bland (IMHO). It's on the high side approaching Lagavulin 16.
Talisker 10 is another good one. Salty, caramel, briney, with a backdrop of peat. Different, but excellent for a nuanced drink while unwinding. Some others I've enjoyed lately are Macallan 12 (sherry aged), Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or (Sauternes), Dalmore, etc... depending on my mood. Damnit, I need a glass..... |

If you like Laphroaig 10 , you should try the Laphroaig 1/4 cask . Great bang for the buck . Less $$ than the 10
Laphroaig 18 is pricey for what it is ( more refine, LESS in your face than Laphroaig 10 ) . If you are going to spend that kind of $$ then pick up Lagavulin 16 and skip the Laphroaig 18 Typically Ardbeg 10 can be had for about the same as Laphroaig 10 . I prefer the Ardbeg range over the Laphroaig Of the big 3 Islay ( Laga, Ardbeg , Laphroaig ) , I prefer Lagavulin 16 , Ardbeg Ugiendail , The other Islays like Bruchladdich ( only heir PC..Port Charlotte is peated ) , Bunnahabhain , Caol ila , Bowmore are totally different since they have no peat or relatively little. Exception is the Bruchladdich Octomore with insanely high peat , Caol Ila is moderate but nothing special really. If you like the peaty smokiness of Laphroaig, stick to the big 3 Islays |

My favorite Islay so far is Caol Ila 12. If you haven't tried and you like peat I'd give it a go. It's no peat monster but I find it balanced and not overpowering.
I grabbed a bottle of High West Whiskey Double Rye on sale today. Anyone here tried it? |
