LCS?

LCS-1 is probably the smallest. The Adams-class, Knox-class, and LCS-2 would all be in the running for second place.

What about RAM?  Is it used on smaller or larger ships than CIWS, generally speaking?

The Mk31 Guided Missile Launching System (aka RAM) essentially uses the same mount as Mk15 Phalanx (aka CIWS). The SeaRAM (not sure of the official designation) uses the same mount as well.

Mk15, RAM, and SeaRAM are all Close In Weapons Systems (CIWS). All perform the CIWS function, even though only one is known as CIWS.

LCS-1 is the same length as the Coast Guard Hamilton Class Cutters at 378 feet.

Have to define "small" At 104 feet in beam and 418 feet long, the LCS-2 class is rather large compared to the Adams-class, LCS-1, FFG-7, or 1052s.

Picky, picky picky!

But, you're right.  a 378 is NOT a squid ship!

The USN doesn't use Phalanx or RAM on their smaller ships, but we don't have large numbers of small ships that could use that ability.

But you can use these on very small ships. For example, the German Gepard-class... under 400 tons, and a full bore RAM launcher.

We didn't put CIWS on the PHMs either. Probably due to the weigh penalty.

The Israelis mount CIWS on smaller ships (Saar 4.5).

I like the General's explanation of "I need to know how the system operates to make better decisions of where to place these systems"

Translation: Oh boy oh boy! I wanna press the button!!!!!

FFG7 was my first thought, because I'm old. Looked at the Hydrofoils (Pegasus class). They didn't have CIWS. Guess they could outrun a missile.

Not sure where on a PHM you would have put a CIWS without losing either the Harpoons or the 76mm.

Losing the Harpoons would have defeated the purpose of the ship, and I imagine they felt that for the missions intended, the 76mm was a better alternative.
