Abandoned Olympic 2004 venues in socialist Athens Greece
On 13 August 2004, the Olympic Games came home to Greece for the XXVIII Olympiad at an estimated cost of approximately €9bn. A decade after the sporting extravaganza, many of its once-gleaming Olympic venues now lie abandoned. For many Greeks who swelled with pride at the time, the Games are now a source of anger as the country struggles through a six-year depression, record unemployment, homelessness and poverty, with many questioning how the nation has benefited from the multi-billion-dollar event 
The Olympic Sports Complex. 
The Schinias Centre in Marathon that hosted the rowing and canoeing competitions. 
An abandoned training field at the Olympic Village. 
The abandoned beach volleyball venue in Neo Faliro. 
Worn press seats at the outdoor Olympic Swimming Pool of the Olympic Complex.

It always seemed stupid to spend all that money to build structures that have no use after the games are over. Why not have a dedicated Olympics center that is used over and over every four years? Have the various countries pay X amount for upkeep.

This is why I don't understand why have these games in countries that can't support it afterwards.
Olympics is a "wonder", it shows a countries wealth and capabilities and showcases it... but it generates no real revenue... in fact, it costs billions that will never come back. |

Baseball is not an Olympic sport but table tennis, handball, and badminton are, what a joke. Fuck the Olympics. I will watch when baseball is back on the menu.

I haven't been into the Olympics in a long long time. Gone are the days of the 1980 Winter Olympics.
I don't get the feeling that any of our athletes even care a wit about representing the nation. What I see is a lot of dope smoking, self important types being subsidized by corporations and begging for money from the average joe. They go and act like assholes and hit the news get caught smoking dope and embarrassing their team. Not all but damned if it doesn't seem to happen every year. All the olympics have had corruption. The Greeks just did it on a grand scale. If they were too stupid to realize "friends" of the in folks made the money and the money came from others, whether tax subsidized or not. |

Athens' Ghost Airport
Built in 1938, it was used as a Luftwaffe base during the Nazi occupation of Greece. It was then used by the United States Air Force after the end of World War Two.
The airport had two terminals: the West Terminal for Olympic Airways, and the East Terminal, designed by star Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, for all other carriers. In its heyday, shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis ran Olympic Airways in lavish style, and his partner Maria Callas added a touch of glamour. Before its closure on March 30, 2001, the airport was serving 12 million passengers per year.

They basically cut the airport in half and dumped all the Olympic venues there. That's one of the few lasting positives from 2004 |
