Well, I've tried and tried to embed-fail!
So, here's a link to show where our fish have been going this winter- Pond is about 3 ft deep right there.
Have netted it with wire mesh for now- Owl is hanging around (Spotted several times during the day).
Good way to lose a cat too.....

http://youtu.be/1F-0WFDDn5k

And a couple years ago:

It's a jungle out here.....

I kept some feeders alive for several years, and even got them to spawn.  One of their offspring lasted several more years and was over 10 inches when she went belly up.

I've been amazed how big they get.
They are just perfect for feeding Owls!

Sorry about your fish but cool video. What game cam are you using? I've got javelina coming in to my water at night and want to see them.

It's an old Wild Game Innovations from 2011.
10 MP, does video or pics, flash and infra-red, day/night or 24 hr selectable. Lousy mounting options until I mounted an old tripod.
Outstanding battery life.
Doesn't have a model # on it, and can't find the paperwork.
Bought it with a wi-fi module, but they never developed the software for it. but it does a pretty nice job.

Would a motion activated light of some sort be effective ? Some really bright LEDs popping on right in it's eyes might keep it away.

Have no idea- the first night I put up the wire mesh (batteries were shot on the cam), next morning I went out and the mesh had been smashed and was underwater.
Nothing since then, even on the cam (except a few mice).

But I bet the minute I take the mesh off- Bam!

He's a BIG sucker!

A lot of American Indians consider the Owl a portent of Death.

They're right.

That was pretty cool. It took 2 Peregrine falcons to put him down into the drink. Raptors vs. raptor. I was surprised to see the owl out in the day. None of the ones around here come out until after dark.

It happens.  I have spooked a few great horned owls out of trees.  I didn't mess with them either, just found myself close to them in the woods.  You look them in the eyes and they decide to find a new roost.

300- water is very scarce here. (NM), and a back-yard fish pond is a ridiculous luxury.

Snow pack in the ski areas which we used to see at 190" plus about now are reporting 30" or so, even up into Colorado.

All our water is ground (well), and we get re-charge from snow pack in the Sandias- they aren't even reporting pack levels this year.

I keep an aquaponics system in my backyard.  The fish tank on the left is 550 gallons.  Have you ever thought about keeping catfish?  They would love the warm water in your pond.  The only issue is the catfish would eat any fish that could fit in their mouth.  Depending on the species, they tend to stay near the bottom so maybe less likely to be preyed upon.

These are Channel catfish:

A friend of mine was losing his fish to raccoons. He put a wire around the pond about 6" high and then hooked it to a fence charger. The first couple of nights there was a lot of shrieking raccoons. They have learned to look for dinner elsewhere.

On a serious note: a client had a pond with expensive Coy fish. Herons were eating them. Herons are protected so he couldn't harm them. He got a sprinkler with a motion sensor on it. When the birds landed and got close to the pond, the sprinkler would blast them.

Problem solved, problem staying solved.

I'd love to do things like that, but every time I take a shower (1 Gallon/minute shower heads), I'm thankful I even got clean before the water disappears .

We had a surveyor out a couple years ago, and he pointed out what we thought were old walking paths- they were irrigation channels from over 100 years ago for apple orchards, long gone.

Water has always been available here in cycles- I don't think I'm going to live long enough to see an abundant cycle.

But, it is home....

Well, they don't have an option for Edo floats, so they gotta taxi to shore to prepare for take off.

"Amphibious Owl" could be a cool name for a band....

You have sun, we have water.  It would be nice to trade.  I'm sure you have no problem growing okra, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, etc.  Hot and dry.  We have a ton of water.  In fact, I have a trout stream in my backyard forming the border between me and my neighbor.  But I would love more sun for my garden.
