He obviously left a good impression on his Great Grandson. Edit: just re-read and I guess I'm more drunk than I thought..? It's likely you never met. Either way... |

Drinking while you build a lower is much riskier, but unless you are blotto, it should go smoothly.
Welcome to NC. ETA: Garner area? PDHSC and Fuquay Guns and Gold. |

View Quote I stopped by Carolina Gunrunners earlier today to pick up the YHM gas block/front sight. Nice store with decent prices. I'm not moving to Garner. Or even NC... I'm here on work right now, I'm going to Little Rock AFB for work on Monday, then I'm going back to DC so that I can move across the river to Alexandria, VA next weekend. |

I'm doing exactly that in a NC hotel room right now in anticipation of my impending change of residence to a free state. Wish I could have bought a lower or two to go with it.. But I guess I'll get to that soon enough. Here's what I've got so far. *Note: I'm only working on the 16" upper tonight and some of the pieces are only finger-tight for the pic. The .300BLK pistol upper will be done another time. http://i.imgur.com/N2f75HJ.jpg I'm starting to be pretty drunk now. Even though I'm going by the book, what are my chances of drunkenly fucking this up?? Aaannndddd.... Speculate wildly. View Quote NC is a free state. |

VA is still better than DC! I hope it stays that way but the fsa is rapidly gaining the upper hand I agree, but living in VA presents a much less egregious rights-violation than having to endure living in DC, as I have for the last year now. Also, and not trying to brag, but I can afford to live in the better (reduced-FSA) parts of the Alexandria area. |

I think being drunk while building a micro ar will give you sub 1/4 MOA on any barrel

Building guns that operate around 60,000 PSI while drinking....what could possibly go wrong.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against alcoholic beverages and I am very fond of firearms. However, I can think of plenty of other things to mix booze with than guns. |

I didn't pack any AR's from my other houses for the move. I'm going to build a whole new stock of them and just have black rifles in every region of the country. It's great! |

The hammer you are using to build uppers is WAY too small. A short handle 12lb sledge is more appropriate for the task. And quit buying the non-regular size buds as they get warm before you get em drank

And quit buying the non-regular size buds as they get warm before you get em drank View Quote I guess you must drink really slowly. Edit- and I left the sledge at home this time. I'll admit it would have driven the pins a lot faster, but it probably wouldn't have had any positive benefit on my already-worn pin punches. |

Not totally relevant, but I love the great State of North Carolina. Goodness I remember living there many many decades ago.

I won't combine gunsmithing and beer after I fucked up the pin channel drilling of an AK-74 gas block. Walked the drill bit a little on one side and ended up with a visible gap above part of the pin on that side. I know I wouldn't have done it if I was sober.
Nobody would really notice the fuckup unless they really knew what they were looking at, but the fact that I know it's there always pisses me off. Not even coffee.. I drink strong coffee and get impatient. |

You fucking kidding ? A "Sudweiser" or two will get you drunk?
Dude, please pour that shitty beer (and I use that term loosely) down the fucking drain. Go and get yourself some nice scotch, vodka, or rum. Pour it over ice and sip it slowly whilst listening to some old school Mo-town . Now, go ahead and build your upper. ......sip on some scotch on the rocks as you listen to this |

i have yet to build an AR without some hop lubrication. I've only built 3 but all three were assisted by barley and hops

Good job, I've had a few myself but I am wondering if your hotel room is equiped with a vice or you brought your own?

Good job, I've had a few myself but I am wondering if your hotel room is equiped with a vice or you brought your own? View Quote About that... I realized rather quickly that it's a different ball game without having either a built lower or a vise. As it turns out, using the flared safety-slide lock on the hotel door inside the back of the upper and also wedging-in the forward assist against the base plate works rather well for bracing when torquing-down the barrel nut. I'm going to blame the District of Columbia for this hardship; if I could have bought a damned lower then this would have been much easier. Either way, I eventually got everything tight and aligned- it was just harder to do. Edited slightly for clarity. |
